It might become a book project, another six years in the making.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then yesterday a thought bubble passed through about an old Katagiri riff that started with something about \u201cWay Nose,\u201d which means something like being able to pick up the scent of the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>dharma<\/a> and follow through, upstream.<\/p>\n<p>Katagiri Roshi continued,<br><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:georgia\"><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">In ancient times, people were more straightforward toward the truth than human beings in our days. We aren\u2019t straightforward. So we have a technical term, \u201ccrooked belly button.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is impossible to contort your belly button because your belly button is always in the center of your situation. But when your belly button is crooked \u2013 toward the right, left, up, or down \u2013 even a little bit you lose the center of your life. <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><em><\/em><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family:georgia\"><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Zen students really have crooked belly buttons. <\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><em><\/em><br><\/span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Are you a gentleperson accepting Buddha\u2019s teaching straightforwardly without any complaints?<\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><em><\/em><br><\/span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">No, you can\u2019t say so. You always discuss from your viewpoint.
