Dog Bodhi sat\u00a0through dokusan\u00a0in the student seat along with each student, sometimes sleeping, sometimes starring wide-eyed at me.\u00a0I\u2019m sorry (but not surprised) to announce that he\u00a0seems no more enlightened now than before.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">I\u2019ve got some comments on a couple Dogen <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>dharma<\/a> discourses that are in the oven and will be served up here as soon as I find a fork to stick \u2019em with.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:medium\">In the meantime, here\u2019s a prose poem that I\u2019ve used often in the intention class that I occasionally teach. It\u2019s by a\u00a0Duluth\u00a0poet, Louis Jenkins, also a favorite of Garrison Keillor, so maybe you\u2019ve heard of him too.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">Indecision<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">People died or moved away and did not return. Things<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\"><br><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">broke and were not replaced. At one time he had owned a<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">car and a telephone. No more. And yet somehow, things<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">did not become more simple. Then one night, roused from<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">sleep he stepped out naked into the below zero winter night,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">into the clear midnight and 20 billion stars. Nothing stirred,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">not a leaf, nothing out there, not the animal self, not the<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">bird-brained self. Not a breath of wind yet somehow the<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">door slammed hut locking behind him and knocking the<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">kerosene lantern to the floor. Suddenly the whole place<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">was afire. What to do? Should he try to make the mile-long<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">run through the woods over hard-crusted snow to the nearest<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">neighbor or just stick close to his own fire and hope that<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:georgia\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:small\">someone would see the light?
