Here\u2019s another blessing poem. This one is from Diane di Prima, quite popular with Katagiri\u2019s students but probably not so well known outside his immediate circle. Diane really captures how it was to hang with the old boy.<\/span>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
A pleasure.<\/span><\/div>\n
We talk of here & there<\/span><\/div>\n
gossip about the folks in San Francisco<\/span><\/div>\n
laugh a lot. I try<\/span><\/div>\n
to tell him (to tell someone)<\/span><\/div>\n
what my life is like:<\/span><\/div>\n
the hungry people, the trying<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0to sit zazen in motels;<\/span><\/div>\n
the need in America like a sponge<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0sucking up<\/span><\/div>\n
whatever prana & courage<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cPray to the Bodhisattvas\u201d sez\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0Katagiri Roshi.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
I tell him<\/span><\/div>\n
that sometimes, travelling, I am<\/span><\/div>\n
to restless to sit still, wiggle &\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0itch. \u201cSit<\/span><\/div>\n
only ten minutes, five minutes<\/span><\/div>\n
at a time\u201d he sez \u2013 first time<\/span><\/div>\n
it has occurred to me that this\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
wd be OK.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
As I talk, it becomes OK<\/span><\/div>\n
there becomes some continuity\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
in my life; I even understand<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0(or remember)<\/span><\/div>\n
why I\u2019m on the road.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
As we talk a continuity, a<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0transfer of energy<\/span><\/div>\n
takes place.<\/span><\/div>\n
It is <\/span>darshan<\/span><\/span>, a blessing,<\/span><\/div>\n
transmission of some basic joy<\/span><\/div>\n
some way of seeing.<\/span><\/div>\n
LIKE A TANGIBLE GIFT IN THE HAND<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0in the heart.<\/span><\/div>\n
It stays with me.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
