Hakuin Ekaku Zenji (\u767d\u96a0 \u6167\u9db4<\/span>, January 19, 1686 \u2013 January 18, 1768), the last national teacher of Japan, and a primary instigator of modern k\u014dan introspection was also a phenomenal artist (see sidebar).\u00a0 Subjects for his work were extraordinarily wide-ranging, from the sublime to the ridiculous, as he depicted the whole rolling ball of buddhanature in the belly of his time and place.<\/p>\n In this image, the bodhisattva of compassion, Kannon sits on a rock ledge, regarding the cries of the world. She sits serene and open-hearted on the edge with just lotus flowers blooming in her immediate field of vision.<\/p>\n The calligraphy on the top of the image says, \u201cNo Realm Not Manifest,\u201d a reference to a\u00a0the Lotus Sutra\u00a0<\/em>passage, \u201cThe Verse of the Universal Gateway\u201d (Fumonbon ge), that is an essential part of Hakuin\u2019s Rinzai Zen and it is still recited daily in most S\u014dt\u014d training centers in Japan. The full stanza goes like this:<\/p>\n \u201cFully endowed with miraculous powers, The \u201cmiraculous powers\u201d here refers to simply regarding the cries of the world. Sitting on the edge. Neither retreating nor advancing.<\/p>\n Reminds me of student who is diligently working with the mu k\u014dan. He recently said, \u201cI feel like I\u2019m sitting on a branch, wanting to fly.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cFly!\u201d<\/p>\n Widely practice nondual wisdom and skillful means, help open the eyes of the world, the whole world, with no one left out. Kannon is fully manifest in every realm, no part left out, but how to make that palpable for living beings, swirling in the sewer of partiality?<\/p>\n What can we do but do it?<\/p>\n \u201cThe Verse of the Universal Gateway\u201d concludes with this:<\/p>\n
\nWidely practicing wisdom and skillful means,
\nIn every land in all directions,
\nIn no realm does Avalokiteshvara not appear.\u201d<\/p>\n
