To the astonishment of a few co-workers and at least one family member, I didn\u2019t go and see the Dalai Lama when he was in town over the weekend.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong, I like the guy. I\u2019ve read some of this books and especially the ones that he<\/u> wrote, I like.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And I did attend a conference with about 100 other American Buddhist<\/a> teachers about 10 years ago in beautiful northern California and happened to be shaking the man\u2019s hand when the photographer from a San Francisco newspaper snapped a shot they liked and printed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So I\u2019ve got that going for me too.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One thing I remember the Dalai Lama saying repeatedly was that he was just a simple monk and had no special powers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Surprisingly, one of my co-workers spoke to me about him and got all googly-eyed saying, \u201cOh, he has such incredible energy.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

However, she\u2019s apparently not interested in practice, just being around his<\/u> energy. This seems like guru-worship, you know, the close friend of teacher-hating \u2013 making the practice about somebody or something else.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Whether the simple Buddhist monk Tenzin Gyatso has or doesn\u2019t have incredible energy is not so interesting.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now if somebody was to say, \u201cWow, that guy has this incredible energy and<\/u> I\u2019m going to study with him and realize whatever it is that he\u2019s realized,\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

or \u201cWow, what a teacher! Now I really see what I need to do to wake up and come hell or high water, I\u2019m going to follow through\u2026\u201d well, that would be more to the point, imho.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Anyway, he\u2019s a nice guy with a sweet smile. Maybe you are too.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He\u2019s also <\/span><\/span>an excellent ambassador to the world for the buddhadharma. Maybe you are too.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
