Sesshin ended earlier today. <\/span>Back on June 25th I posted some thoughts about the earthworm koan regarding living a divided life.<\/span> Here at Wild Fox we\u2019ve been focusing on the earthworm again. Its keeps wiggling back. Today I look at it more closely, in terms of our hearts.<\/span>\n

In the assembly of Chang-sha, Minister Chu asked, \u201cAn earthworm is cut in two pieces; the two pieces are both moving. In which piece do you think Buddha-nature exists?\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
The earthworms here can be seen as our wiggling hearts \u2013 vast and giddy karmic consciousness \u2013 always cutting this way and that, cutting off this one and choosing that one. Even choosing the mind that doesn\u2019t prefer. Moving, cutting.
<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
The minister is asking, \u201cIs this cut-away mind the Buddha-nature?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span>\n
The teacher said, \u201cNo delusions!\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Come on, teacher, answer the fellow straight way! <\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
What\u2019s that? Oh, you are? Thirty more years of practice.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
The minister replied, \u201cBut how do you explain their movement?\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Wiggly delusion, wiggly delusion even chasing after no delusion. But it\u2019s perfect, isn\u2019t it, this wiggly mind? Please affirm my delusions, teacher.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
The teacher said, \u201cWind and fire are not dispersed.\u201d<\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Water and earthworm-made earth either. Trying to catch a greased earthworm is frustrating. Is there another way? From deep, calm mind, what way is pointed to by Chang-sha\u2019s no delusion! <\/span>and <\/span><\/span>wind and fire are not dispersed?<\/span><\/span>
