I just saw Bill Maher\u2019s mockumenarty, Religulous<\/span> \u2013 the Catholics come out lookin\u2019 pretty good thanks to a couple odd-ball priests, otherwise Judaism, Islam, and Christianity all take a severe beating.<\/p>\n

I enjoyed the movie and found Maher\u2019s emphasis on doubt and reason refreshing. But then I tend to like rough humor. The film underscored for me the importance of zazen as a practice for deep reflection and not for becoming a not-thinking zombie.<\/p>\n

During dinner conversation, we turned to what a mockumentary of Buddhism<\/a>, Buddhiculous,<\/span> would include. Here\u2019s a few ideas for scenes: a literal view of karma (\u201cI kicked a dog in a past life so limp in this life\u201d), magical thinking about the big E (\u201cgonna have the big one and then no more problems the rest of my life\u201d), fetishism about the forms (\u201cIf I do the forms exactly like Dogen, then I\u2019ll be enlightenment\u201d), and my teacher knows best (\u201cbut my teacher really does know best\u201d).<\/p>\n
