Along with various translations, we\u2019re also using Sen\u2019ne\u2019s 13th Century commentary where we find this about the \u201cko\u201d in <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Genjo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">ko<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic\">an, <\/span>usually understood according to Sen\u2019ne, to equalize the unequal:<br><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:'lucida grande'\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS'\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:'lucida grande'\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS'\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:'lucida grande'\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">What can we use as a criterion to define equalizing inequality?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS'\"><span style=\"font-family:Times\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:'lucida grande'\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"> Once we understand that to be equal and to be unequal are one, it is not possible to say that we equalize inequality.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family:'lucida grande'\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Yeah, arrogant to think that we can know what is fair. Arrogant to think that we can make it fair.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>And yet, the child in the photo reaches out his or her hand. Clearly, doing nothing because we understand that equal and unequal are one, would be stinky <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>buddhist<\/a> bullshit.<\/p>\n<p>What can we do?<\/p>\n<p>This past week at work, a probation officer for some of the young people I work with brought his replacement over to meet people. Just the visual scene was striking to me \u2013 a tired, greying man of about 60 with red, tight facial skin and a young woman in her mid twenties, fresh, smart, and enthusiastic.<\/p>\n<p>During our conversation, the young woman indicated that she was confident that she could make a difference. \u201cLook,\u201d said the old guy, \u201cif you\u2019re really good, maybe you can help one or two kids a year. That\u2019s it. The sooner you accept that, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What criteria can we use to determine what is help and what isn\u2019t?<\/p>\n<p>Understanding that help and no-help are equal, we can relax deeply into the first vow: <span style=\"font-style: italic\">The many beings are numberless, I vow to free them all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Knowing in our hearts that the work is endless, we can roll up our sleeves and go to work without leaking energy when our ideas about equal and unequal, help and no-help are seen for what they are \u2013 just our ideas.<\/p>\n<p>The universe is reaching out it\u2019s hand too.
