Like the baby in the picture or grumbling and resistant?<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">One way of taking responsibility for making zazen alive is to frame some aspects of the day with <\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">gatha. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">For example, here\u2019s\u00a0a translation \u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">Verse for Waking Up\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: normal\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">that I worked on with Katagiri-roshi in about 1982:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">Waking up in perfect peace<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">Vowing with all beings<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">To realize everything without exception<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">Embracing the ten directions.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">Roshi told me to sit up in bed immediately after waking up, put my hands in gassho, chant the verse, then immediately get up without lingering and go on with the day. I don\u2019t always follow his advice exactly.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">The first words, \u201cwaking up,\u201d are a translation of <\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">go<\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\"> or enlightenment. <\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">Go <\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">is used here with a double meaning: the everyday opening our sleepy eyes and everyday satori right before our eyes if we are awake to see. We added \u201cin perfect peace\u201d to highlight the second layer of meaning.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">\u201cVowing with all beings\u201d refers to the huge scope of our practice, continuing no matter how long or how difficult the road might be, to carry all beings from the shore of suffering to the other side of the river, nirvana (literally, referring to what happens to a flame when it is blown out \u2013 where did it go?).\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">And our intention is not to avoid anything but to fully realize the emptiness of it all and in so doing embrace the deep importance of everything without exception.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">The last line literally is something like, \u201cNot denouncing the ten directions.\u201d I suggested phrasing it positively and Roshi grunted his agreement. \u201cEmbracing\u201d is different from \u201cnot denouncing,\u201d however, so these days I\u2019m exploring the difference.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size:large\">What differences do you see between \u201cembracing\u201d and \u201cnot denouncing\u201d in actual practice?<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/4330911338438640912-6244557001431062455?l=wildfoxzen.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How did you wake up in this morning?
