The picture above is what it might look like back in the woods, although the photo is from last year about this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">I\u2019m off soon to Deep Spring Zen Center up on Thirsty Hill near Pittsburgh for a weekend sesshin. We\u2019ll be working on <i>Gyoji<\/i> or <i>Continuous Practice<\/i> as well as sitting a lot and meeting a bunch too in dokusan and <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>dharma<\/a> talk.\u00a0 But before I go I want to tie up some loose ends from the post-modern-power theme that I\u2019ve been working recently.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\">Here\u2019s an excerpt of Kusa\u2019s comment on the post before last:<\/span><\/div>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>The concern here is twofold \u2013 first, there is more to be worried about in post-modernism as a theoretical framework than is usually expressed (although there is much in it that seems right on \u2013 perhaps all of it\u2026); and we either have to be prepared to give up, as <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist<\/a> teachers, students, practitioners, much of what we may <\/span><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>believe about the Buddhadharma, or we should have good reason to believe our ideas about Buddhism are privileged in any respect.<\/span><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>I choose door #1: I don\u2019t think ideas about Buddhism are privileged in any respect. Let\u2019s give \u2019em all away. Certainly, this is the process that we undertake through the Mu koan, washing Mu through everything, and in shikantaza, dropping even dropping.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Which reminds me of a student that I met with recently for koan work. The student presented their response to the koan at hand and when I said something like, \u201cYes, that\u2019s it!\u201d the student said something like, \u201cYes it is and if you said it wasn\u2019t, that wouldn\u2019t change what I saw.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><br><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Exactly. There might, of course, be something else to be seen and\/or a clearer presentation, but this kind of confidence is really a good spirit for this work.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>And yet that isn\u2019t the full story. There is letting go, sometimes thought of as deconstruction of the phenomenal world, and there is reconstruction, what Dogen called \u201cmaking manifest the great earth\u2019s goldenness.\u201d These two are like the front and back foot in walking.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>In order for the incredible message of the buddhadharma to be clearly communicated to in the global culture, we need to drop a lot, especially frames about the teacher-student relationship, so that we can truly be in a teacher-student relationship. The parent-child frame is one idea that needs to be deconstructed. The teacher as the person who affirms a student\u2019s understanding is another.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'> <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/span>I\u2019ll leave you with a koan that comes to mind that brings the deconstructive and reconstructive aspects together:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: large\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><\/div>\n<div style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'><i><span style=\"font-size: large\">Jingqing asked a monk, \u201cWhat\u2019s that noise outside the door?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>The monk said, \u201cThe sound of raindrops.\u201d<\/span><br><span style='font-family: Georgia,\"Times New Roman\",serif'>Jingqing said, \u201cAll beings have it backwards.
