There\u2019s a lot to the story. Sex, power, enlightenment, denial, self-righteousness, pretense, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">And then there\u2019s the Roshi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">Anyway, the above image keeps coming to mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">You might be scratching your head about now wondering, \u201cWhat the heck, Dosho?\u201d Or \u201cAre those really snowshoes?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">Let me assure you, they are snowshoes and this is a post with a moral \u2026 so first we need to take a trip to a big lake.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">Last summer, I was on vacation, driving through the Upper\u00a0Peninsula\u00a0of Michigan (separating two big lakes) and I stumbled on the shrine for the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadsideamerica.com\/story\/11140\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Snowshoe Priest<\/a>,\u201d Bishop Baraga. Ever hear of him? I hadn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">Turns out that in the mid-1800\u2019s this Slovanian priest travelled many hundreds of miles in winter with snowshoes from native village to native village, establishing and visiting missions.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">One of them was about where the above statue sits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">He had a cousin known as the Mosquito Priest who did the rounds in the summer (not really).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">Baraga really learned Ojibwa and Ottawa and wrote the first Ojibwa dictionary. He also wrote a bunch of respectful stuff about native people for his superiors. Despite his mission to missionize them, it seems like he was a pretty level guy. Then he died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">Sometime in the 1950\u2019s a group formed dedicated to getting him declared a saint. Think of all the meetings with weak coffee and bars (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.joyofbaking.com\/barsandsquares\/BarsAndSquares.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this kind<\/a>)! I don\u2019t understand why anybody would want to do that (tourism?) but they raised money and built the above monument, almost completing it in 1972. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">But it\u2019s hard to be a priest, even a dead one that others wanna-be-a saint. As the Roadside America.com link \u00a0says, \u201cAs the Bishop\u2019s statue was being lowered onto the cloud, a portion of  the statue\u2019s hemline caught on one of the beams. When an acetylene torch  was used to cut it away, the polyurethane lining within the statue  ignited, and in moments smoke and fire engulfed the sculpture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">Here\u2019s Father Baraga on fire:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_0uPSljNE9f4\/TSDUVoZBeCI\/AAAAAAAABCM\/LeHuDOAHbbU\/s1600\/MILANshrine18_1139.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_0uPSljNE9f4\/TSDUVoZBeCI\/AAAAAAAABCM\/LeHuDOAHbbU\/s320\/MILANshrine18_1139.jpg\" width=\"225\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\"><br><\/span><br><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\"><br><\/span><br><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\"><br><\/span><br><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\"><br><\/span><br><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\"><br><\/span><br><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\"><br><\/span><br><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\"><br><\/span><br><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">They did finally get it done and it\u2019s  pretty impressive in a retro kind-of-way: six stories high, made from  bronze, and standing on a stainless steel cloud.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">The Vatican, though, has many applications for the \u201cwho wants to be a saint\u201d competition, so they haven\u2019t ruled on Father Baraga yet, even though I bet he has as good a statue as anybody. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">Now the Snowshoe Priest had nothing to do with putting himself on a cloud (especially of the stainless steel variety) or the accidental torching. We don\u2019t even know if he smoked. Like I said, seems like he was a pretty level guy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">In Eido Shimano\u2019s situation (or so it seems) and for many of us in Zen teaching positions, it\u2019s very attractive to collude with others in order to get\u00a0elevated like the Snowshoe Priest \u2013 maybe even addictive. Sometimes Zen teachers (and others, of course, but just to be specific) use elevated positions to trade for other stuff \u2013 sex, power, <\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">donations, <\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">laughs at <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>dharma<\/a> talks, what have you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">Pe<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">ople\u2019s opinions, though, are not made of stainless steel and few of us even have a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">polyurethane lining (although I have seen Zen priests wearing koromo and kesa that looked like they might \u2026<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">\u00a0but I digress).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">Then there\u2019s the issue of serving the dharma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">The moral of the post is this: be careful not to stand on clouds and be <\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">especially <\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">careful <\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">with<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman',serif;font-size: large\">\u00a0the hemline of your robe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/4330911338438640912-4311399803696502545?l=wildfoxzen.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been reflecting on the Eido Shimano situation (read more here\u00a0and here).
