As a someone who\u2019s spend a lot of\u00a0time at Greenbelt and other festivals, I\u2019m drawing to thinking about how what\u00a0Wild Goose is actually going to\u00a0look\u00a0like, and\u00a0feel\u00a0like. How a site is\u00a0set up can say a\u00a0huge amount about the values of an event, whether that be a\u00a0Presidential inauguration or a weekend camping.\n

So one thing I\u2019m hoping Wild Goose\u00a0isn\u2019t <\/em>going to be is\u2026 clean. We\u2019re used to clean homes, places where we know\u00a0how things work and what goes where, but one of the core things about going to a\u00a0festival is that all of these homely securities are disturbed. We eat strange\u00a0foods, have different sleep patterns, let our hygiene standards slip\u2026just a\u00a0little.<\/p>\n

What we classify as \u2018clean\u2019 or\u00a0\u2018dirty\u2019 is more relative than we think. A Coke can in a freshly plowed field is\u00a0litter. Transport that same can to your fridge, and it\u2019s the mud from the field\u00a0that suddenly\u00a0becomes the filth. Things get dirty when things get out of place,\u00a0and Jesus spent much of his ministry challenging people\u2019s ideas of what was\u00a0dirty and clean, acceptable and unacceptable. He touched\u00a0lepers, spoke with\u00a0Samaritan women, dined with tax collectors and had his feet washed by a\u00a0prostitute.<\/p>\n

But these things were done not to\u00a0bring people pain, but to help to see \u2018the other\u2019 afresh. The harsh nature of\u00a0Jewish law meant that Pharisees could literally walk by on the other side \u2013\u00a0allowing\u00a0themselves to remain \u2018clean\u2019, but meaning they had no engagement with,\u00a0or empathy for, those who were excluded by society.<\/p>\n

The wonderful thing about festivals\u00a0is that our own dirt boundaries are challenged. For a few days we have to\u00a0re-think what is \u2018in\u2019 or \u2018out\u2019, and my prayer for Wild Goose is that it will be\u00a0a properly dirty\u00a0carnival, where God\u2019s radical acceptance of us is modeled,\u00a0and where an inclusive paradise is tasted by all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
