I made my first trip\u00a0to\u00a0the Greenbelt Festival<\/a> in the UK last summer. After years of hearing about how there\u2019s nothing\u00a0like\u00a0it in the US, I arrived at the Cheltenham Racecourse where some 20,000 people had set up camp, shop, seminar, pub and church\u00a0for\u00a0a four-day weekend. After getting\u00a0\u00a0fish and chips from a food vendor (I was in England, after all), I ran into my American friend, Stanley Hauerwas<\/a> \u2013 also there for his first time. \u201cDid\u00a0you\u00a0know anything\u00a0like\u00a0this existed?\u201d I asked him. \u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cI feel\u00a0like\u00a0I\u2019m living in the 19^{th<\/sup> century.\u201d<\/p>\n}

I am a product of revivalism in the American South. The camp meetings had come and gone by the time I was born, but they were the catalyst that gave rise\u00a0to\u00a0the Baptist and Methodist churches that surrounded me with Jesus. I grew up going\u00a0to\u00a0revival meetings at church every fall, expecting somebody\u00a0to catch the Spirit and get born again. We knew something wasn\u2019t right with the world, and we knew that only Jesus had the power\u00a0to\u00a0change us.<\/p>\n

Lots of folks are critical of revivalist spirituality these days. It over-emphasized emotion, some say. It was susceptible\u00a0to\u00a0political manipulation and market appropriation in a capitalist society, others say.\u00a0To\u00a0some it is the epitome of hypocrisy;\u00a0to others, it implies ignorance. I\u2019ve listened closely\u00a0to\u00a0all of these criticisms, and I\u2019m sympathetic\u00a0to\u00a0many of them. But I\u2019m also still glad\u00a0to\u00a0be a product of 19^{th<\/sup> century revivalism. What it more, I\u2019m glad that its spirit is stirring again\u2014and not only in the UK.<\/p>\n}

An interesting mix of folks from across the theological and political spectrum have been plotting a festival in the tradition of Greenbelt here on American soil. It is\u00a0to\u00a0be an arts festival, they say, that is attentive\u00a0to\u00a0beauty, but equally concerned with the proclamation of good news and the practice of justice in our world today. It\u2019s not a space\u00a0to\u00a0be owned by any of America\u2019s fragmented church traditions, but rather a place of hospitality where all are welcome and where, God willing, some who\u2019ve been strangers (or estranged, even) might become friends. They\u2019re calling it the Wild Goose Festival. I\u2019m excited\u00a0to\u00a0see what comes of it.<\/p>\n

When I was at Greenbelt, which is soon approaching its 40^{th<\/sup> year, I wandered into a coffee tent with a friend and met a dear woman who told me she\u2019s been baking cakes and making coffee at Greenbelt since its very first year. I asked how she came\u00a0to\u00a0be part of the festival, and she said it started on her farm. It was a gathering of friends who went home\u00a0to\u00a0tell other friends and kept coming back\u00a0to\u00a0celebrate the life that God had made possible in a beautiful interruption.\u00a0You\u00a0can\u2019t make that sort of thing happen, but I trust that the Spirit is always eager\u00a0to\u00a0break into our lives and start something that brings a little more of heaven here on earth. I think that\u2019s what happened when the revivals rolled through North Carolina in the 1800\u2019s, and I pray that\u2019s what will happen again when the first Wild Goose Festival gathers next summer.<\/p>\n}
