So\u00a0<em>The Wild Hunt\u00a0<\/em>must\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/patheos.com\/blogs\/wildhunt\/tag\/unleash-the-hounds?webSyncID=03087cba-a155-b970-2063-8a236edc146d&amp;sessionGUID=431be245-6930-83a6-eeb9-ceae88848336\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">unleash the hounds<\/a>\u00a0in order to round them all up.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10241\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10241\" style=\"width: 456px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">XKCD by Randall Munroe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Considering how many times Wicca has been called the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Claims_to_be_the_fastest-growing_religion#Wicca\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cfastest growing religion in America,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0by both supporters and detractors, <a href=\"http:\/\/xkcd.com\/1102\/#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the latest XKCD comic reminds us<\/a> to not get too wrapped up with the numbers, because they can be deceptive.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/archive\/culture\/6333\/burning_man%3A_fear_of_an_alternative_pagan_social_order\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">At <em>Religion Dispatches<\/em> John Morehead writes about Burning Man<\/a>, and the fear it generates of an <em>\u201calternative Pagan social order.\u201d<\/em> Quote: <em>\u201cFor evangelicals like Matthews, Burning Man embodies deep-seated fears which can also be seen playing out in other aspects of American culture. Many conservatives fear that America is undergoing decay, and this is taking place in the spiritual realm as well. A lingering economic malaise, coupled with our continued cultural fascination with apocalyptic scenarios, provides a context in which Burning Man functions as a\u00a0Rorschach\u00a0test.\u201d<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/archive\/culture\/6333\/burning_man%3A_fear_of_an_alternative_pagan_social_order\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The whole thing is worth a read.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.utexas.edu\/news\/2012\/08\/30\/merge-supernatural-scientific-beliefs-unknown-reasoning\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The University of Texas at Austin has published a new psychology study<\/a> in\u00a0the June issue of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22417318\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Child Development<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that shows a \u201creliance on supernatural explanations for major life events, such as death and illness, often increases rather than declines with age.\u201d Study lead author\u00a0Cristine Legare noted that <em>\u201cthe data, which spans diverse cultural contexts across the lifespan, shows supernatural reasoning is not necessarily replaced with scientific explanations following gains in knowledge, education or technology.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The Americans United <em>Wall of Separation<\/em> blog critiques efforts by\u00a0Focus on the Family (FOF) and the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.au.org\/blogs\/wall-of-separation\/equal-rights-for-bullies-religious-right-comes-to-the-defense-of-faith\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">carve out exceptions for religious bullying at public schools<\/a>. Quote: <em>\u201c<strong>It attempts to carve out an exemption for protected \u201creligious\u201d bullying.<\/strong>\u00a0In several states, Religious Right groups have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.au.org\/church-state\/january-2012-church-state\/au-bulletin\/michigan-anti-bullying-bill-omits-religion\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">attempted to exempt<\/a>\u00a0bullying and verbal harassment based on sincere religious beliefs. In other words, a fundamentalist Christian kid can harass a gay student as much as he wants as along as he sincerely believes what he is saying. Some yardstick there!\u201d\u00a0<\/em>You can read the FOF-ADF document, <a href=\"http:\/\/media.citizenlink.com\/truetolerance\/AntiBullyingPolicyYardstick.pdf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A married couple\u2019s strife leads to arson, and\u00a0hospitalization\u00a0for both. Both admit on the record to having marital issues, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegram.com\/article\/20120830\/NEWS\/120839929\/1116\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">yet the headline, and part of the article, is about how the wife believes in Voodoo<\/a>\u00a0due to past instances where she called the police with, quote, <em>\u201cbizarre accusations.\u201d<\/em> There doesn\u2019t seem to be anything Voodoo related with this incident, so why include in the headline? Seems prejudicial to the wife, and distorts what could be a tragic, and sadly common, case of domestic violence escalated to extreme levels.<\/li>\n<li>Rev Dr Peter Mullen must live a small, sad, life. How else can you turn watching the opening of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/sport\/olympics\/paralympic-sport\/paralympics-gb\/9507622\/Paralympics-2012-Hawking-opens-ceremony-with-a-Big-Bang.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">opening ceremony of the Paralympics<\/a>\u00a0into <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/petermullen\/100178527\/the-big-bang-and-the-sacred-flame-are-we-descending-into-paganism\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a concern-trolling editorial about how we\u2019re\u00a0descending\u00a0into Paganism<\/a>? Quote: <em>\u201cBut then I looked further and thought, at least, that I glimpsed a little of what this confusion says about modern society. We are indeed eclectic. And the old word for this, when applied to widely held beliefs and practical behaviour was \u201cpaganism\u201d \u2013 the worship of many gods: that mountain of confusion classically represented by the panoply of argumentative deities on Olympus. Only an eclectic contemporary paganism could allow the godless Big Bang to walk hand in hand with the sacred flame.\u201d<\/em> Seriously. Can someone take this guy out to a movie or something?<\/li>\n<li>The Republican National Convention is now over, and I know everyone wants to talk about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/sltrib\/blogsoutofcontext\/54803114-64\/romney-trib-convention-speech.html.csp\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Clint Eastwood\u2019s interview with Invisible Obama<\/a>, but I wanted to point out this exploration of Tuesday night\u2019s closing invocation by\u00a0Samuel Rodriguez, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talk2action.org\/story\/2012\/8\/30\/121851\/425\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a member of the radical spiritual warriors of the New Apostolic Reformation<\/a>. Quote: <em>\u201cBlessing the convention was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhclc.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">National Hispanic Leadership Conference<\/a>\u00a0President Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, who has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/debatingobama.blogspot.com\/2011\/10\/cindy-jacobs-and-lisa-millers-lingering.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">served<\/a>\u00a0as an apostle in C. Peter Wagner\u2019s International Coalition of Apostles and has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.talk2action.org\/story\/2011\/9\/24\/155523\/590\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">extensive<\/a>\u00a0ties to Wagner\u2019s movement.\u201d<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/wildhunt\/tag\/new-apostolic-reformation\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">I\u2019ve covered this movement quite a bit over the years<\/a>, and their\u00a0ascendancy\/integration\u00a0within the Religious Right is troubling for those hoping for a \u201cbig tent\u201d religious conservatism, or a more moderate conservative Christianity.<\/li>\n<li>Erynn Rowan Laurie, author of <a id=\"static_txt_preview\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1905713770\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1905713770&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thewildhunt-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cA Circle of Stones\u201d<\/a>\u00a0recently completed a\u00a0pilgrimage\u00a0to Ireland, <a href=\"http:\/\/searchingforimbas.blogspot.com\/2012\/08\/kildare.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">and she has posted the first installment of her write-up<\/a>. Quote:<em> \u201cOur visit to both of the wells was held in a deluge. I think every well we visited while we were in Ireland, with the exception of Brigid\u2019s Well in Mullingar, was rained on. We certainly connected with the watery side of Brigid\u2019s powers during our pilgrimage! Prayers were offered for Brigid\u2019s blessing on our work, offerings were made, and intentions set in the pouring rain. I remembered all my friends and the folks who had donated to my travel funds for the pilgrimage at her well, offering prayers for them, as well.\u201d<\/em> I look forward to future installments!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10242\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10242\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Northumberlandia (Banks Mining\/PA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/9506204\/Northumberlandia-giant-naked-goddess-carved-into-hillside.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">We carved and shaped a giant goddess image into the earth<\/a>, but please don\u2019t think it\u2019s Pagan, says a spokesperson.\u00a0<em>\u201dNorthumberlandia is just a lady, she doesn\u2019t represent anything, but I think it\u2019s understandable that people have their own interpretations.\u201d<\/em> Chas Clifton retorts: <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.chasclifton.com\/?p=4562\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cCheck back at one of the quarter or cross-quarter days.\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li>For those inspired by\u00a0<a title=\"Aristophanes\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aristophanes\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Aristophanes<\/a>\u00a0classic play\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lysistrata\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lysistrata<\/a>, you might wonder, do sex strikes really work? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/explainer\/2012\/08\/sex_strike_in_togo_do_sex_strikes_ever_work_.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Slate.com says \u201cyes,\u201d but mostly as way to draw attention to an issue<\/a>. Quote: <em>\u201cThe Togolese group cites as its inspiration a strike organized in 2003 by a women\u2019s peace group to encourage the end of the Second Liberian Civil War. (The effort was chronicled in the 2008 documentary\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.praythedevilbacktohell.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pray the Devil Back to Hell<\/a>.) Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace did force an end to the war, but their tactics were more complicated than a simple sex strike: They also staged sit-ins and mass demonstrations, which were arguably far more effective than the sex strike. Leymah Gbowee, the leader of the peace group,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=iG29fmjtm2QC&amp;lpg=PP1&amp;pg=PA147#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote in her memoir<\/a>\u00a0that the months-long sex strike\u00a0had little or no practical effect, but it was extremely valuable in getting us media attention. Until today, nearly 10 years later, whenever I talk about the Mass Action, \u201cWhat about the sex strike?\u201d is the first question everyone asks.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s it for now!
