Period. Without the acceptance that the female divine is as holy as the male, human women will never fully take their place alongside men in terms of respect. We will still be objects to f-ck and vessels for a man\u2019s sperm, owned by men, dominated by men, abused by men, and flushed down the toilet at will. Valueless.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I want to make it clear I am not saying that women should be held above a man in terms of her value. I am also not saying that all women are goddesses and should be worshipped as such. I am saying that without a healthy, socially accepted construct for a feminine divine equal to the masculine divine, we are a society out of balance, leaving women vulnerable to be blamed and attacked whenever something goes wrong.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sadly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.policymic.com\/articles\/7821\/the-goddess-in-the-toilet\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the piece<\/a> doesn\u2019t really go into McClain\u2019s vision of what an\u00a0acceptance\u00a0of the female divine should look like in our society, or how that impulse manifests in her own life. Is she a Goddess\u00a0worshiper? Would she like to see a revival of polytheism? Or is this more of a \u201cgoddess within\u201d sort of thing? In any case, a provocative read, sure to incite some debate, even if she did\u00a0misspell\u00a0Noam Chomsky\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery:<\/strong> This week and next is the\u00a0the 11th Session of the\u00a0<a title=\"United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/social.un.org\/index\/IndigenousPeoples.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues<\/a> (UNPFII), and a primary focus will be the infamous\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctrineofdiscovery.org\/index.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Doctrine of Discovery<\/a> and <em>\u201cits enduring impact on indigenous peoples and the right to redress for past conquests.\u201d<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com\/2012\/05\/07\/the-u-n-permanent-forum-on-indigenous-issues-will-be-dominated-by-the-doctrine-of-discovery-111500\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Indian Country Today Media Network reports on the work by\u00a0indigenous leaders and activists to overturn the legal legitimacy of conquest<\/a>. \u00a0The taking of \u00a0\u201cpagan\u201d lands that begun with\u00a0Papal Bulls of the 15th century, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johnson_v._M'Intosh\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">and was eventually enshrined in American law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_9607\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9607\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Opening of the 9th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe forum includes 16 independent experts, who serve up to two three-year terms. Half are nominated by governments, and the others by indigenous organizations in several regional groupings\u2014Africa; Asia; Central and South America and the Caribbean; the Arctic; Central and Eastern Europe, Russian Federation, Central Asia and Transcaucasia; North America; and the Pacific\u2014that encompass the world\u2019s 370\u00a0million Indigenous Peoples.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Two years ago, Tonya Gonnella Frichner, Onondaga, the former North American Regional Representative to the forum, presented a paper called, \u201c<a title=\"A Preliminary Study on the Doctrine of Discovery\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.pace.edu\/pelr\/vol28\/iss1\/11\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">A Preliminary Study on the Doctrine of Discovery<\/a>,\u201d which explored the underlying reasons for the worldwide violation of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 human rights. The study found that the Doctrine of Discovery, which developed from 15th century papal bulls and the royal charters of European monarchs that gave European Christians the right to claim lands \u201cdiscovered\u201d by their explorers if no Christians lived on those lands. If the \u201cpagan\u201d inhabitants converted to Christianity, they might be allowed to live; otherwise they could be killed or enslaved. The doctrine eventually became embedded and institutionalized in law and policy internationally.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There\u2019s been an ongoing groundswell of activism to get churches to repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery. Most <a href=\"http:\/\/immigrationjustice.blogs.uua.org\/education\/restoring-indigenous-peoples-rights-a-pathway-from-australia-to-arizona\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">recently within the Unitarian Universalist Association<\/a>, who will consider\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/immigrationjustice.blogs.uua.org\/education\/new-doctrine-of-discovery-discussion-guide\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a responsive resolution repudiating the Doctrine of Discovery in June during the 2012 General Assembly<\/a>. Check out\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/details\/InterviewWithZaySpeerAtThe2009ParliamentOfTheWorldsReligions\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">my 2009 interview with activist and Reclaiming Witch Zay Speer<\/a>, who was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/parliament.pagannewswirecollective.com\/2009\/12\/audio-interview-with-zay-speer\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">at the last Parliament of the World\u2019s Religions<\/a>, working with the\u00a0Onondaga Nation to end the Doctrine of Discovery. An agenda and program for the UNPFII can be found, <a href=\"http:\/\/social.un.org\/index\/IndigenousPeoples.aspx\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ernest Callenbach\u2019s Final Statement:<\/strong> A document found on the computer of the late\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ernestcallenbach.com\/Home+contact.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ernest Callenbach<\/a>, the acclaimed author of\u00a0<a id=\"static_txt_preview\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0960432019\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thewildhunt-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0960432019\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cEcotopia,\u201d<\/a> written shortly before he died, <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2012\/05\/07\/479120\/must-read-the-powerful-final-words-of-ecotopia-author-ernest-callenbach\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">has been published<\/a>. In it, <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2012\/05\/07\/479120\/must-read-the-powerful-final-words-of-ecotopia-author-ernest-callenbach\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Callenbach calls for hope, mutual support, and the adoption of practical skills<\/a> in the face of ecological disaster and violent\u00a0environmental\u00a0change.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_9608\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9608\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ernest Callenbach<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThese are dark times, these are bright times. We are implacably making the planet less habitable. Every time a new oil field is discovered, the press cheers: \u201cHooray, there is more fuel for the self-destroying machines!\u201d We are turning more land into deserts and parking lots. We are wiping out innumerable species that are not only wondrous and beautiful, but might be useful to us. We are multiplying to the point where our needs and our wastes outweigh the capacities of the biosphere to produce and absorb them. And yet, despite the bloody headlines and the rocketing military budgets, we are also, unbelievably, killing fewer of each other proportionately than in earlier centuries. We have mobilized enormous global intelligence and mutual curiosity, through the Internet and outside it. We have even evolved, spottily, a global understanding that democracy is better than tyranny, that love and tolerance are better than hate, that hope is better than rage and despair, that we are prone, especially in catastrophes, to be astonishingly helpful and cooperative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We may even have begun to share an understanding that while the dark times may continue for generations, in time new growth and regeneration will begin. In the biological process called \u201csuccession,\u201d a desolate, disturbed area is gradually, by a predictable sequence of returning plants, restored to ecological continuity and durability. When old institutions and habits break down or consume themselves, new experimental shoots begin to appear, and people explore and test and share new and better ways to survive together.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Consider this something of a counter-point to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/wildhunt\/2012\/05\/michael-york-being-upon-the-brink-of-catastrophe.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Michael York\u2019s somewhat apocalyptic editorial from yesterday<\/a>.
