There wouldn\u2019t have been a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renaissance\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Renaissance<\/a> without the art and writings of the Classical world, and the pagan-humanist hybrid that began there has been an integral part of the fine arts ever since. Pagan symbolism is such an ingrained part of art\u2019s language, that it can become unconscious, <a href=\"http:\/\/aclj.org\/school-prayer\/painting-over-cross-protecting-pagan-symbols\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">at least until it becomes politicized<\/a>. However, a growing trend within the world of fine art is making the connections between art, Paganism, and the occult, explicit. I recently mentioned the <a href=\"http:\/\/observatoryroom.org\/2012\/03\/19\/sigils-signs-a-group-art-show\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cSigils and Signs\u201d<\/a> show in Brooklyn,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.animalnewyork.com\/2012\/manhattanhenge-2\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Manhattanhenge ritual performance art piece<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/1249459446\/the-collective-tarot-round-iii\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cCollective Tarot\u201d project<\/a>, but that\u2019s just the tip of the iceberg. For example, the photographer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.katarzynamajak.com\/en\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Katarzyna Majak<\/a> recently <a href=\"http:\/\/portercontemporary.com\/women-of-power-katarzyna-majak\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">opened a show at the\u00a0Porter Contemporary gallery in New York entitled <em>\u201cWomen of Power,\u201d<\/em><\/a> a body of work that <em>\u201cexplores the power of women\u00a0as she searches for female wisdom and plurality of spiritual paths hidden within monoreligious Polish society.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_9791\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9791\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9791\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julia, An Independent Witch; Enenna, Wiccan Coven Leader; Maria Ela, Shaman Wise Women Council (Katarzyna Majak)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe women of wisdom, healers, enchanters, visionaries and spiritual leaders depicted in Majak\u2019s vibrant photographs often facing discrimination, have taken great risk in being photographed. This is the first time many of them owned their power publicly. Majak\u2019s journey with the Women of Power began when one of them accompanied her in a ritual to say \u2018good-bye\u2019 to her wedding dress, and the journey continued from woman to woman as the artist became fascinated with their alternative wisdoms on female power.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another New York space, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jonathanlevinegallery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jonathan LeVine Gallery<\/a>, recently wrapped up a solo exhibition by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicolaverlato.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nicola Verlato<\/a>, who tells the Huffington Post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/06\/08\/nicola-verlatos-how-the-w_n_1571175.html#s1053617&amp;title=How_the_West\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">that his work illustrates a conflict between monotheism and polytheism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cPolytheism survives in the western world through pop culture, and in several countries like India, which are becoming more prominent in the modern world, and are largely polytheistic. In our overwhelmingly monotheistic culture this task has been relegated to the field of entertainment; pop culture has now essentially taken on the task of creating the mythologies of our time. There are several artists today who are, more or less, consciously working on mythologies, as painters and sculptors. They work mostly out of Los Angeles, and are usually listed under the definition of Pop surrealists. I think our work may possibly be considered a contribution towards a cultural shift.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris showcases <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quaibranly.fr\/en\/programmation\/exhibitions\/currently\/les-maitres-du-desordre.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe Masters of Disorder,\u201d<\/a> art that depicts figures of disorder and chaos, and those individuals, shamans, medicine men, artists, and sorcerers, who negotiate with them. The exhibition mixes traditional tribal art with modern and contemporary pieces <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/news\/2012-06-06\/wine-gods-shamans-sorcerers-get-ecstatic-in-paris-show-review\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cto free what used to be labeled as tribal art from the limits of ethnology and judge it from a purely aesthetic angle.\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_9zEGOd35rM<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_9zEGOd35rM\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe exhibition looks at the figures of the disorder, entered the pantheon of our beliefs and cultures, Dionysus Seth Typhon, and technicians, shamans and other intercessors here called \u201cmasters of disorder\u201d, responsible for negotiations with the forces of chaos. In this constant compromise between turbulence and reason, rituals are the preferred mode of negotiation with the powers that govern human societies. Along with these sacred rituals, feasts, revelry, carnivals or festivals of fools seem to be the other way, profane, allowing the unleashing of transgressive impulses.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s a provocative concept, one that places the idea of chaotic external forces, and the need for ritualized interactions with them, into the here-and-now, instead of in a fossilized past. It also places the modern artist into a pantheon of magic-workers and ritualists.<\/p>\n<p>As I said earlier, these examples are simply a sampling of a phenomenon that is far larger, <a href=\"http:\/\/lancashirewitches400.org\/#\/art-artists\/4564153949\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">other examples are easy to come by<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phantasmaphile.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">there are new ones emerging on a regular basis<\/a>. They collectively portray <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/~landy\/reenchantment\/synopsis.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">a process of re-enchantment<\/a>, a new direction and purpose after what some called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/052154016X\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thewildhunt-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=052154016X\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cthe end of art\u201d<\/a> <\/em>during the height of post-modern conceptualism. A new emphasis on the roles artists can play in our society, and the importance of art in exploring the liminal in our lives. It is a process that I think our community should be more actively engaged in. While we have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scarletimprint.com\/datura.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">admirably embracing the poetic arts<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terramysterium.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">plays and\u00a0theater<\/a>, crafts, and functional art, I think we could be doing more, collectively, to support the fine arts: painting, sculpture, photography, installation, in our community. Not simply because it would benefit Pagan visual artists, but because it would also help us connect with our own roots in the use of art as a means of magic and communication.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most obvious legacies our modern world holds from its pre-Christian \u201cpagan\u201d past are the visual arts.
