While driving along a New York Highway, a big rig trucker witnessed something he couldn’t believe. In front of him, he watched a passenger in an SUV throw two dogs out of a window. After observing the unbelievable event, the truck driver immediately pulled over to rescue the dogs. Authorities in New York say that one of the dogs is badly hurt, and they are looking for the owners of the vehicle.
According to a report by the Associated Press, the incident happened on highway 81 near Whitney Port, New York. The truck driver told police that he witnessed two dogs thrown out of a rear window of a dirty, rusty Dodge Durango.
After he saw the dogs tossed to the side of a snowy highway, the truck driver pulled over to rescue the two pups. He scooped up the severely injured dog. The other dog appeared uninjured and followed him to his truck.
While he waited for police, he attempted to keep the injured pup warm. When police arrived, they splinted his leg on the side of the highway. Police kept the dog warm by wrapping him in a blanket and sweatshirt.
Once the police stabilized the dog, they transported the two dogs to the Humane Society. When the dog arrived at the shelter, vets determined he needed surgery to remove his mangled leg. Given the magnitude of what the dog went through, the Humane Society named him Trooper.
The Human Society reported that Trooper suffered multiple fractures to both front legs. Due to a severe break in Trooper’s right leg, the vet had to amputate the leg. Additionally, Trooper suffered broken ribs and bruises to his lungs and shoulders.
The Humane Society said Trooper will recover but will need assistance to move around. A spokeswoman for the Humane Society said,
“These animals have been through a lot, and people need to understand that this is not OK,” said Amberly Ondria, shelter manager for the Broome County Humane Society. “This is not something that should be done.”
Vets say that Trooper is 6-8 years old, and the other dog, named Adam after the truck driver, is around five years old. Both dogs are Beagle mixes.
Despite the heroic effort taken by the truck driver, reports have not identified him. Adam, the truck driver, told officers he has a dash cam in his truck. State Troopers hope video taken from Adam’s dash cam will provide them a lead in the crime.
Perhaps the sweetest part of the story is that Adam told the Humane Society that he wants to adopt the dogs after they recover. The Director of Broome County Humane Society said,
“What’s very endearing about this is that the gentleman who saved him on the highway is very interested in making his home the forever home for these dogs,” she said.
New York State Troopers updated their Facebook page on December 14, providing details of the case.
Adam, the truck driver, has ensured that at least two of those dogs will no longer suffer and hopefully enjoy the remaining years of their lives in a happy home.
Thank you, Adam!
