A South Carolina pastor is taking a ton of heat for buying his wife a $200,000.00 Lamborghini. John Gray works as a pastor for the megachurch Relentless Church in Greenville. He posted a video on Instagram last week giving his wife the luxury car. Social media went wild with hate and anger following his obnoxious display of wealth. Many critics of the purchase suspect the pastor stole the money from the church.

According to multiple media reports, John Gray recently took a position as a pastor at an Evangelical megachurch in South Carolina. Gray accepted the job at Relentless Church in May after church founder Ron Carpenter left the congregation.

Gray is no stranger to obnoxious displays of wealth. He works for the grand-daddy of all greedy pastors in the Evangelical circuit, Joel Osteen. In addition to his work at Relentless, Gray serves as an associate pastor for Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston Texas.

In the video that was uploaded to Instagram, Gray walked his wife out to the bow-decorated Lamborghini. He handed his wife the keys and said, “Lamborghini Urus.”

Since uploading the video, Gray has been defending his purchase and tacky display of wealth to his Instagram followers. On Thursday, Gray took to Facebook to explain the purchase.

Gray insists that “not one nickel” of the money used to buy the Lamborghini came from his church salary. Instead, he said he saved his money for years to be able to buy his wife the car. Gray insisted he used money from his second-book deal and income he earned from his reality show “The Book of John Gray,” on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Even Gray’s wife started getting flack from Instagram users, and she clapped back at all the haters. She compared her husband’s purchase of the car to purchases made by professional athletes.

“I don’t see anyone screaming about how basketball players drive what they do while you paying $$$ to see them play in arenas and on fields,” she wrote on Instagram. “We don’t live for people! We live for God!”

The area the church serves in Greenville, South Carolina is not known for being home to the abundantly wealthy. According to a report on KVUE, the average median income for a family of four is around $54,000.00. Even though he serves the lower middle-class community, Gray believes he’s entitled to purchase the car for his wife.

On Facebook Gray said,

“My wife has pushed for my dreams and my vision, and she has toiled with a man who is still trying to find himself,” Gray said. “That carries a weight. I wanted to honor her for how she’s covered me.”

Local news outlets are critical of his assertion that the money came from his savings. When Gray took over Relentless Church in May, he obtained full control of the church’s assets.

There is no word if parishioners from The Relentless Church have demanded financial records to prove Gray’s claims.

However, If I were a member of that congregation, I would say to Gray, “You have some explaining to do.”

“I don’t see anyone screaming about how basketball players drive what

They pay taxes. You assholes don’t.

  • Right? I feel like the wife is a little TOO self-important. Pastors and professional athletes should never have equivalent salaries.

Seems like a bribe to shut the wife up.

Professional sports is anything but play. It’s a demanding job that requires years of preparation and carries inherent risks to long term health. Fans get immediate return for their dollar in goods or services, and a team owner will refuse to renew any contract that fails to provide a return on investment.

In contrast, Gray is in the only business where it’s legal to accept cash without exchanging a tangible product of any value whatsoever, and it’s sole unique “virtue” is the absence of any metric or definition of performance. When his customers take his ethical behavior literally on faith and don’t insist on so much as a financial disclosure, just what other outcome should they expect? It’s not as if there is some kind of magic man in the sky to hold him accountable.

  • sounds about right!

  • Correct. Pastors are the real con men

  • I think clergy do pay taxes on their salaries, since my mom helped the pastors of our old church with their tax returns. It is the institution itself that is tax exempt.

  • Clancy

In NY, clergy are considered self-employed professionals, and pay taxes accordingly.

Unfair criticism! Don’t you know that gawd *always* needs money! Being made out of non-matter gawd has always had to rely on numerous Earth based grifters“volunteers” to handle all of that money.

I thought God needed a starship! How can God get a starship if his ministers keep on wasting donation money on overpriced ground-vehicles?!

  • Zetopan

Maybe their devious plans are to convert those overpriced ground vehicles into coal burners and then weld them all together to make their coal powered starship. Have you forgotten about all of the huge brained stable geniuses in the Whitehouse (have to include all of the moron evangelists as well)? Some clean coal[sic] along with thoughts and prayers can allegedly accomplish anything!!*
*Especially if no one actually pays any attention to the outcome.

“I don’t see anyone screaming about how basketball players drive what they do while you paying $$$ to see them play in arenas and on fields,” That’s because basketball players do not claim to speak for any god. A priest/pastor should recognize that they will be held to a higher standard than others.
