Mother Baselessly Claims Marijuana Has Cured Her Daughter’s Cancer

Mother Baselessly Claims Marijuana Has Cured Her Daughter’s Cancer January 6, 2019

A mother in Michigan believes “medicine” she makes at home is curing her child’s brain cancer. Becky F. posted an update on Facebook announcing her success using marijuana to heal her daughter’s cancer. She believes that distilling marijuana in coconut oil will keep her daughter cancer free for life, cure her seizures, and replace her daughter’s need for additional chemotherapy and radiation.

According to Becky, her daughter suffers from multiple illnesses including seizures pain, nausea, and brain cancer. Her daughter has undergone numerous brain surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation to treat the disease.

When doctors discovered her daughter’s brain cancer returned, Becky decided to take matters into her own hands. Becky decided instead of putting her daughter through radiation and chemotherapy that she would treat her daughter’s cancer with marijuana.

In her post, Becky said,

“Can you guess what I’m doing?!

No I’m not getting high… no I’m not doing anything illegal… no I’m not making the wrong choices…I am making my daughters medicine for the next 90 days! Medicine that she will need probably for the rest of her life to keep her from having cancer.. for the THIRD TIME!”

Following her exciting announcement, Becky went on to list the benefits her daughter has experienced. Becky believes her concoction of marijuana and coconut oil has eliminated her daughter’s cancer, reversed brain damage, stopped seizures, replaced chemo and radiation, and has kept her cancer free for two years.

But no matter what you call it or what your opinion is on this, it doesn’t change t the fact that:

THIS saved my daughters life!

THIS reversed side effects from radiation to her brain that were supposed to be permanent!

THIS has taken the place of keppra to stop seizures

Cannabis has taken the place of OxyContin and morphine after a 2nd brain surgery!

Cannabis took the place of zofran and to control nausea and vomiting!

THIS took the place of periactin and megace to increase her appetite!

Cannabis took the place of Benadryl and sleep aides to help her sleep!

THIS took the place of all the chemo meds and complete cranial spinal radiation they wanted to do on my daughter when she relapsed!

After she uploaded her post, commenters went wild. Mothers with sick children asked Becky for advice on how to treat their children. One mother asked Becky if marijuana would cure her daughter’s neurodegenerative disease.

Other parents of children with cancer, asked Becky if abandoning chemo and radiation will cure their children. One mother asked Becky if she could help her treat her daughter’s and her own lung cancer.

As more people jumped onto Becky’s promise of a cancer cure, others started to push back on her claims. According to the American Cancer Society marijuana is not proven to treat, prevent, or cure cancer. However, marijuana is approved in many states to manage symptoms associated with cancer and cancer treatment.

Cancer patients that use marijuana can see improvement in appetite, pain, and nausea.

“There have been some early clinical trials of cannabinoids in treating cancer in humans and more studies are planned. While the studies so far have shown that cannabinoids can be safe in treating cancer, they do not show that they help control or cure the disease.

Relying on marijuana alone as treatment while avoiding or delaying conventional medical care for cancer may have serious health consequences.”

Becky’s claim that the cannabis cured her daughter’s cancer is unfounded. The American Cancer Society indicates that the only benefits from cannabis or marijuana are when the plant is smoked or eaten. Reducing the plant into an oil extract has not been studied.

Additionally, there is little to no evidence that cannabis oil can help with nausea, vomiting or pain.

“A number of small studies of smoked marijuana found that it can be helpful in treating nausea and vomiting from cancer chemotherapy.

A few studies have found that inhaled (smoked or vaporized) marijuana can be helpful treatment of neuropathic pain (pain caused by damaged nerves).

Smoked marijuana has also helped improve food intake in HIV patients in studies.

There are no studies in people of the effects of marijuana oil or hemp oil.”

Although her method is not studied nor approved to treat cancer, Becky fought back against attacks by commenters. One commenter, Amanda, suggested Becky’s claim provided false hope to desperate people. Amanda became worried about Becky’s claims because Amanda’s uncle died from the same form of brain cancer.

In their exchange, Becky shared a copy of her daughter’s MRI from 2017. Following the 2017 MRI, Becky said her daughter had brain surgery. Doctors recommended chemotherapy and radiation, but Becky declined these treatments. Instead, Becky opted to use marijuana oil to treat her daughter.

Becky provided a copy of her daughter’s MRI written report. The report indicated the presences of a lesion in the brain. The radiologist noted lesion growth from August 2017 to February 2018.

Commenters pushed back and insisted that the MRI report does not indicate remission or cancer cure. Additionally, Amanda pointed out that the MRI proves that her daughter has on-going issues and a lesion.

Even though numerous people pushed back, others cheered on Becky for choosing marijuana for her daughter. Several people shared their success using marijuana to treat chronic pain and nausea. However, no one in the comments said marijuana had successfully cured their cancer.

Becky’s daughter has an aggressive form of brain cancer called Medulloblastoma. The disease produces tumors throughout the brain and spinal cord. Tumors are fast growing, and aggressive treatment is needed to stop cancer’s progression. Surgical resection of the tumors followed by chemotherapy and radiation has proven to slow the progress of the disease.

According to St. Judes, medulloblastoma has a 70-80% survival rate if the tumors have not spread to the spinal cord. If the tumors spread to the spinal cord,  the survival rate is 60%. Children under age three at diagnosis have the poorest prognosis.

Becky’s daughter has undergone multiple resections and rounds of chemo to treat her cancer. Due to this fact, there is no way to determine the effectiveness of cannabis in treating the disease.

Even though her claims sound miraculous, there is no likelihood that cannabis cured her daughter. Nor should her statements be used as a reason for a patient to abandon traditional cancer treatments.

Alternative medicine is not proven for cancer treatment. People that use alternative therapies instead of chemotherapy and radiation are five times more likely to die. While her daughter may be in a phase where her cancer is not growing as quickly, reports do not support Becky’s claims.

Finally, please do not believe unbelievable claims on the internet.

Cannabis is a virtual miracle cure for many children with multiple seizure disorders that drugs from big pharma are completely unable to treat. This knowledge is decades old. Specific strains of cannabis like “Charlotte’s web” that are high in CBD and low in THC have been developed to help these kids. In the US we have seen case after case in the news where children having multiple seizures per day are reduced one or two seizures per month by consumption of high CBD cannabis extracts. And following that a trail of families forced to leave jobs and home behind and immigrate to California, Colorado and Washington so that they might treat their child’s illness without having to go to jail. All this insanity while cannabis is clearly safer than tobacco or booze. Why is our government continuing to lie about cannabis???

The madness is over, Fully Legalize cannabis NOW!!!

  • your claims are absolute garbage. Charlette’s Web is made from hemp oil – which has NO therapeutic properties at all.

  • Jennny

Cannabis oil was in the news in the Uk last summer when 2 mothers of children with severe epilepsy went to Canada to get some, after Toronto did clinical trials. it was confiscated on re-entry to the UK. They made a good case that it was the only thing that stopped their sons’ fits, up to a hundred a day and were desperate as it was so efficacious.
BUT that does NOT make it a cure-all for everything from an ingrowing toe nail to cancer….that it certainly isn’t. Or doctors, highly trained scientists, practising evidence-based medicine would be delighted to prescribe it…and not use that arch-enemy, Big Pharma which has a track record of cures, real cures for life-threatening and other illnesses..

There are so many questions on Quora about symptoms and diseases and cures, and so many stupid answers. And all you can say essentially is “See a medical professional if at all possible. Because with the best will in the world, laypeople cannot diagnose and treat you at a distance – or not.”

  • Michael Neville

“Oh, herbal medicine’s been around for thousands of years!” Indeed it has, and then we tested it, and the stuff that worked became ‘medicine’. And the rest of it is just a nice bowl of soup and some potpourri. –Dara Ó Briain

  • otrame

Well, as Tim Minchin says, “You know what we call alternative medicine that has been proven to work? Medicine.”

I have no doubt her daughter had less pain and more appetite. And frankly, I think there’s an argument after the third surgery/chemo session with one of the most virulent and intractable cancers there is that stopping treatment except to make the poor kid as comfortable as possessive makes a great deal of sense.

And I can’t blame her for hoping. But we didn’t start actually curing cancer, or even extending lives, until we took the “hope” out of it and stuck to science. Since there appear to be no studies on the effects of marijuana processed the way she’s doing, and IF there has actually been an improvement, maybe it is worth looking at. Scientifically, not by word of mouth.

  • Ricky

Charlotte’s Web is CBD oil, same as the recently FDA approved Epidiolex. Your claim is garbage.

  • With cannabis legalised in Canada and parts of the US we’re going to see a lot more research into its medical uses. But a lot of fans are going to be very disappointed when a lot of the claims don’t pan out.

  • Jim Jones

    And when the kid dies . . . . ?

  • No it’s not. Charlotte’s web is garbage. it’s not CBD oil – it’s extracted from hemp seed – with has no medicinal components.

  • Ricky

You’re a clown. It’s not from hemp seed. Did you hit your stupid head on something? And then you delete my comment. What sort of loser are you?

  • Ricky

This post is stupid and the author and mods are child like.

  • Ricky

Seriously, FK YOU! FKN retarded moron.

“Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most malignant brain tumor and one of the deadliest types of solid cancer overall. Despite aggressive therapeutic approaches consisting of maximum safe surgical resection and radio-chemotherapy, more than 95% of GBM patients die within 5 years after diagnosis. Thus, there is still an urgent need to develop novel therapeutic strategies against this disease. Accumulating evidence indicates that cannabinoids have potent anti-tumor functions and might be used successfully in the treatment of GBM. This review article summarizes the latest findings on the molecular effects of cannabinoids on GBM, both in vitro and in (pre-) clinical studies in animal models and patients. The therapeutic effect of cannabinoids is based on reduction of tumor growth via inhibition of tumor proliferation and angiogenesis but also via induction of tumor cell death. Additionally, cannabinoids were shown to inhibit the invasiveness and the stem cell-like properties of GBM tumors. Recent phase II clinical trials indicated positive results regarding the survival of GBM patients upon cannabinoid treatment. Taken together these findings underline the importance of elucidating the full pharmacological effectiveness and the molecular mechanisms of the cannabinoid system in GBM pathophysiology.”

“To date, cannabinoids have been allowed in the palliative medicine due to their analgesic and antiemetic effects, but increasing number of preclinical studies indicates their anticancer properties. Cannabinoids exhibit their action by a modulation of the signaling pathways crucial in the control of cell proliferation and survival. Many in vitro and in vivo experiments have shown that cannabinoids inhibit proliferation of cancer cells, stimulate autophagy and apoptosis, and have also a potential to inhibit angiogenesis and metastasis. In this review, we present an actual state of knowledge regarding molecular mechanisms of cannabinoids’ anticancer action, but we discuss also aspects that are still not fully understood such as the role of the endocannabinoid system in a carcinogenesis, the impact of cannabinoids on the immune system in the context of cancer development, or the cases of a stimulation of cancer cells’ proliferation by cannabinoids. The review includes also a summary of currently ongoing clinical trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of cannabinoids as anticancer agents.”

There are many studies showing cannabis/cannabinoids kill cancer cells.

You completely mis quoted her! You should have asked her instead of mis quoting or taking what she said out of text. But that wouldn’t be fun at all.

  • Ricky

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and aggressive form of primary malignant brain tumor in adults, with poor prognosis. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are key-mediators for cellular communication through transfer of proteins and genetic material. Cancers, such as GBM, use EV release for drug-efflux, pro-oncogenic signaling, invasion and immunosuppression; thus the modulation of EV release and cargo is of considerable clinical relevance. As EV-inhibitors have been shown to increase sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy, and we recently showed that cannabidiol (CBD) is such an EV-modulator, we investigated whether CBD affects EV profile in GBM cells in the presence and absence of temozolomide (TMZ). Compared to controls, CBD-treated cells released EVs containing lower levels of pro-oncogenic miR21 and increased levels of anti-oncogenic miR126; these effects were greater than with TMZ alone. In addition, prohibitin (PHB), a multifunctional protein with mitochondrial protective properties and chemoresistant functions, was reduced in GBM cells following 1 h CBD treatment. This data suggests that CBD may, via modulation of EVs and PHB, act as an adjunct to enhance treatment efficacy in GBM, supporting evidence for efficacy of cannabinoids in GBM.”

Lady I hope you get sued! You lying cee you next Tuesday! Your article is nowhere near accurate you don’t even have her right diagnosis I can name about 7 things you are wrong about and you just made up. You need to be sued and Fired

  • Melissa

Im having a very hard time with this article being you do not have all the facts and changed alot od the information.

  • EDorrance989

Is there a reason why all of Becky’s comments keep getting deleted. On a story avout her child that mentions her and her directly by name?

  • Melissa

The mother you are speaking about keeps trying to correct you and you are deleting her comments. She is trying to let you know you presented false information.

  • Melissa

She didnt have 3 surgeries, nor did she have epilepsy. This is not 100% and is fabricated information.

  • Melissa

All be beckys comments on here were deleted too.

  • Melissa

That isnt even the type of cancer she had

  • Ricky

So I’m beginning to gather. As someone who reads constantly about everything cannabis related I was quick to click this ‘article’. It’s a pretty obvious anti-pot hit piece.

Can you tell me what medical conditions she’s actually dealing with?

  • Melissa

Medulloblastoma. this lady is posting information that is NOT true. She didn’t NOT have cancer 3x, she never had epilepsy. The mother that is named in this post is trying to reach out and clear this up but her comments are being deleted. All this information and real names were posted WITHOUT permission. What this little girl went through is a miracle and even the doctors said so.

  • Ricky

There are clinical trials underway in Australia using cannabinoids for Medulloblastoma. It’s clear the author did zero research to see if the mothers approach has merit. Too busy trying to write a sensational anti-pot piece. I wouldn’t be surprised if this crap gets shred by the pro cannabis movement in the next 7-14 days. I’ve seen it over and over.

My mother died from her ‘chemo medicine’ and while they were killing her the only thing that made her feel any kind of good was a cannabis tincture. I’ve spent nearly a decade since reading and learning all I can about cannabis, prohibition and its endless medical and industrial uses. Prohibition is a scam.

    Best wishes to this family.

  • swbarnes2

But of course, this mother is not using CBD as an adjunct to chemotherapy.

And of course, lots of things affect cells in petri dishes. That in no way proves that a compound will do anything inside a person.

  • Ricky

I didn’t say she was and didn’t condone what she is doing. I’m merely pointing out that it’s not simply crackpot as the ‘author’ implies.

  • swbarnes2

You can smother cells to death in a petri dish with enough peanut butter. Treating cancer with peanut butter is still crackpot.

  • Ricky

Cannabinoids have killed cancer cells both in vivo and in vitro and have and are currently being studied in human trials. We aren’t talking about just petri dishes any longer. I didn’t read where this mother was using peanut butter?

  • TheBookOfDavid

Oh, that’s easy. The kid received at different times both clinical therapy and home remedy, so it’s obvious that the former is to blame. Or perhaps it was the fault of CBD oil deficiency.

  • Melissa

Ricky im so sorry. My comments with the truth keep getting deleted. As well at the mother who is mentioned

  • Melissa

Why do you keep deleting the Mothers comments? You used her name without permission and cant even let her clear the story up with TRUE information you left out.

  • persephone

What are you quoting from? I don’t see a link or title.

  • persephone

Weak ass loser with unattributed quotes.

If you don’t like it here, leave. Don’t start name calling the mod.

BTW, I’ve literally muted all the potheads on twitter, because every damn time someone posts about their pain or health issues, some stoner starts posting links and crap about the wonders of pot. Even when you tell them you’re allergic (I am), they will not STFU. Seems to be the side effect of regular use.

  • Lori

Freedom of speech, you exercise your right, allow others to exercise theirs and allow people to form their own opinions!! Allow the mother you are condemning to speak her side!! “This article has soo many twisted words and missing facts!
I have not with held medicine from my daughter. She is not suffering while I refuse medical treatment!
The truth and facts are that when my daughter was dx 3/30/15 with medulloblastoma she under went a 17 hr brain surgery, from which she lost her ability to walk, talk, use her arms or legs. We were desperate scared parents and did Everything the drs told us too! In Michigan the only protocol available was complete cranial and spinal radiation for her type of cancer! We went to st Jude hospital where ashlynn was accepted into a clinical trial that offered to do focal radiation rather than radiate the whole brain and spine. She did 4 months of high dose chemotherapy and then 6 weeks of focal radiation.
Given Ashlynn’s young age at the time complete radiation to her whole brain and spine would have drastic life long side effects including her mental capacity would more than likely never exceeded the mental age of 9-10. She would have to take growth hormones for the rest of her life, her heart, lungs, liver and kidneys would have all been effected, her cognitive delays as well as hearing loss and vision issues are also a big risk. Not to mention you can only receive so much radiation in a lifetime. That would have tapped her out on the amount she would ever be able to receive, so should her cancer return their would be nothing further they could do.

We were cancer free for 15 months after the conventional therapies… at which time she relapsed. In a different area of the brain this time. Their was no treatment being offered other than the complete cranial and spinal radiation for us this time. We had the drs do another brain surgery and remove the 2nd tumor… but this is where the writer of this article took things and twisted them! We opted to hold off on radiation and chemotherapy this time, and use cannabis along with diet change and other vitamins and such to boost her immune system.
My daughter sees a team of oncologists every 3 months as well as neurologists…she is closely monitored and is thriving very well!
What we started using with hopes to bide time to give our precious baby a better quality of life has kept her cancer at bay for 2 years now! Permanent side effects from her radiation started to go away… balance issues, anxiety, coordination, comprehension… we started seeing drastic improvements… yet cannabis doesn’t work??
I beg to differ! Cannabis may not save everyone… nor will chemo and radiation… but I’ll be damned if I sit back and don’t fight for my child’s right to have an amazing life! One that she can be happy and healthy and thrive the way she is! It is our duty as parents to protect our children, and do what is best for them! In THIS situation… our choices have proven to be for the best interest of our child! If that makes us bad parents… so be it! ❤️” ~Becky F.~

Alternative medicine are more accepted now a days due to it’s promising results unlike pharmaceutical medicine, alternative medicine don’t give negative effect such as kidney and liver problems when it comes to long term use. As for my alternative medicine usage, I use medical marijuana. Different strain has a variety of uses and effect depending on your needs. from here
