For six years, I have raised a child with several life-threatening diseases. Due to his illnesses, people that learn about his diseases offer to help us with a miracle cure. More than a dozen people have offered to cure my son’s hormone disease with essential oils. Today I’m here to say something straight from my heart. Stop trying to kill my son by offering us essential oils.
“I heard that there is an oil that can cure Adrenal Fatigue,” A kind stranger said to me.
“My son doesn’t have adrenal fatigue. He has adrenal insufficiency,” I responded.
“Have you looked at an essential oil to help him? Maybe you could get him off all his medications?” She asked me.
“If I take my son off his medications, he will die.”
I stopped responding.
I wish this conversation were a one-time event. However, I promise you that I have heard it over and over again in this world of Multi-Level Marketing businesses. It seems that everyone on Facebook is selling a product that could potentially HELP my child. More than a few times I have had products offered to me to help with his blood sugar, weight gain, heart health, and adrenal insufficiency. Every time I kindly say no.
There isn’t any nice way of going around this. I see so many people selling these oils, and they promise you that everything can be cured via a dab of this or a rub of that. It’s not true. No amount of oil is going to grow back a missing gland in my son’s brain. Offering me oil to help his missing hormones is not only uneducated but life-threatening.
Here are examples of cures I’ve recently seen:
I wish I were the only person in this community that has been offered this as an option. However, I hear it over and over from other parents that are dealing with life-threatening diseases. These reps suggest diabetes, heart disease, hypothyroidism, and bacterial infections can be treated with oils.
They tell us that they want to help us get off the medication. “Just think outside of the box,” many of them say.
I understand that the thought of living on medication for some is hard to bare, but for our son, it’s life or death.
Listen, I wish my son didn’t need medication to live, but without his medicine, he would die. Additionally, I wish a simple fix like oil could fix his brain, make his hormones work, and mend his broken heart. Yet, this is beyond what oil can do.
My son is missing critical parts of his endocrine system. If we don’t replace the hormones and cortisol, my son will die. Adrenal insufficiency is a life-threatening disease that prevents his body from producing enough life-saving cortisol.
If a person makes no cortisol, they cannot control their blood sugar, blood pressure, and body temperature. Without drugs to replace the cortisol, my son’s blood sugar would be zero. Simply put, he would die within days.
For years, I have sat here and bitten my tongue. I have been kind and courteous to every person that has offered this advice. Inside the anger has eaten me alive. Today I am done being nice about this topic. Stop offering me dangerous advice that you learned online. Please, stop telling me oils will cure or “fix” my son.
No one on earth wants my son to be healthy more than me. However, I am smart enough to know that his illness has no cure. Also, I know that the medications that are provided to him by his doctors work effectively and keep him alive. Sure, the medicines have side effects. However, I’d rather deal with the side effects than my son dying from using essential oils.
Truthfully, sometimes parents have to make difficult choices that aren’t ideal. Giving my son medications, daily injections, and providing food to him through a tube is not how I expected to parent. In the early days, I struggled with accepting his illness.
During the first few years of raising my son, I felt deep grief and sadness about my son’s health. However, over time I learned to embrace every part of him.
Quickly, I realized that no one fights harder to live each day than my son. If my son can find a way to smile through all the pokes and meds, then I can find a way to accept his illnesses. I trust his doctors because I know he is thriving because of the medicine they prescribe.
Through my acceptance of him, I learned that there is no use wasting time trying to cure him. I see parents waste time and energy trying to make the impossible happen with their children’s illnesses. Parents try to rid their child’s autism, diabetes, cancer, and other diseases through unproven treatments.
When parents refuse to treat their child’s diseases, they are not only neglectful, but they are abusive. Using unregulated treatments on a child is entirely irresponsible.
For all the reps hawking these products, please stop selling false promises to families. Stop preying on the desperation they feel about ending their child’s suffering.
Please stop offering essential oils as a cure for anything. Essential oils cannot cure any disease. The FDA does not approve oils as a treatment, cure, or prevention for any known disease.
Also, please understand that if you sell oils and recommend them as a cure for a life-threatening disease, your advice could harm or kill the person.
Do better and stop putting your constant need for cash above the health and safety of others.
No amount of money is worth killing someone or causing great harm.
Stop being a snake oil salesman and get a real job.
