Teen Mom OG’s season finale featured the arrest of Amber Portwood and the impact her decision had on her children. Amber Portwood’s storyline this season building up to her arrest showed a woman at her breaking point and struggling to manage her mental illnesses.
During an appointment with her psychiatrist, Amber Portwood admitted that she was struggling to hold herself together. Additionally, she understood that due to her poor mental health she sabotaged her relationships.
“There’s just too much life to live to keep living this way. Then you have those moments, where you’re not proud and you’re like… ‘ugh, I did it again.'”
Realizing she caused the bulk of her issues in her life, she tried to sort through her choices. When her appointment ended, Andrew Glennon picked her up. In the car on the way home, Portwood told her boyfriend that she pushes away happiness, which meant she could push away Glennon. Andrew asked Amber what he could do to help her. She said,
“All you can do is just be there for me and be happy.”
Later in the episode, Portwood sat down and spoke with her cousin Crystal. During the conversation with Crystal, she confided that Andrew consistently made jokes when she tried to open up to him.
“He’ll joke when it’s not time to joke. I just think that when he jokes when we’re talking about things that bother me, that bothers me. I know it’s hard for people to understand.”
In the final scene of the episode, police sirens blare while headlines pop up on the screen outlining the details of her arrest. Rather than returning to Amber Portwood, viewers listen to Gary and Kristina Shirley sort through the arrest and the impact on the children.
While eating at a restaurant, Gary and Kristina appear exhausted and emotional. At times, Kristina seems to be holding back tears as she discusses her stepdaughter Leah.
Kristina says, “I wish we could just wake up and say it was a dream.”
Gary responds to his wife,
“You know, if anything is true, from what I heard, there need to be some sort of repercussions for something. He’s saying one thing. She’s saying one thing. And a hit’s a hit. Whether you do it with a flip flop or a hammer.”
Gary then shared the impact Amber’s arrest is having on her daughter and son James.
“I mean this has an impact on all of us. She didn’t just affect her own self and her own family; it trickles down to us too.”
Fighting back the tears, Kristina agrees with her husband about the heartache the arrest is causing Amber’s daughter Leah.
“It’s heartbreaking. I know it’s flipped the world upside down of everyone that’s involved. How do we continue to co-parent with, you know, the legal issues involved and Leah’s emotions? And I know that you’re taking it pretty rough too.”
Gary Shirley responded by highlighting the arrest and subsequent incarceration of Amber in 2012. In 2012, Amber was charged with multiple felonies related to an attack on Gary Shirley. Rather than completing court-ordered drug rehab, Amber opted to serve her prison sentence.
“My heart breaks for the kids. I went through this with her. Leah went through this with her. And now, it sounds to me like James is gonna have to go through this,” Gary said.
Kristina Shirley responded by clearing up many fans questions related to how Amber’s arrest has impacted her nearly 11-year-old daughter.
“I mean, ultimately, Leah is almost 11. She knows a lot of what’s going on,” Kristina said. “I think the only thing she’s said to me though was, ‘If mommy goes back to prison, what will happen to James? Will James be taken away from me as well?’ And I don’t have those answers; I don’t know how to answer her. She deserves to be a kid, and these are adult situations.”
With the final statement by Kristina, the latest season of Teen Mom OG ended. Amber’s altercation with Andrew Glennon was not filmed because the production had already wrapped. However, Dr. Drew Pinsky will interview Amber Portwood during the reunion show which airs next week. During a clip of the reunion, Amber implies that Andrew cheated on her.
Since her arrest, Amber Portwood has provided several excuses for her violent outburst. On Instagram, she shared images that blamed Andrew for cheating and driving drunk. Then a source told USWeekly that Portwood believed that Andrew stole money from her.
No matter her reasons for attacking Andrew, Amber predicted the end of her relationship this season. She admitted she pushes away happiness and sabotages relationships. Since Portwood’s arrest, the court awarded Andrew Glennon primary custody of their son, James. Last week Glennon petitioned the court to move to California with James to be near family and work.
Amber’s next court appearance is scheduled for later this week.
The season finale of Teen Mom OG follows months of dismal ratings. There is no word if MTV will renew the series for another season.
