2 weekends ago, all 3 kids went on a church retreat which meant Scott and I were alone [raucous cheering and whooping]. \u00a0I enjoyed\u00a0many blissful activities including several hours each day to read. \u00a0I dug into Ling\u2019s banned books (click here<\/a> to read about that).\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n

All day Sunday I re-read\u00a0The Help<\/i>, which I had read a couple years ago. \u00a0It\u2019s just my kind of book\u2013chronicling the stories of Black maids in Mississippi in the 1960s. \u00a0Even though there\u2019s been controversy around the book, with questions around a White woman writing in the voice of Black women, and a White character mobilizing Black characters rather than Black characters mobilizing themselves, I still loved it.\n

So I couldn\u2019t wait to see the movie. \u00a0A month ago, I played hooky from work, kids and life to see a matinee. <\/p>\n

Just me, myself and I. . . \u00a0and a crew of senior citizens. \u00a0Very senior senior citizens. \u00a0They rolled in with wheelchairs and nurses. \u00a0The whole movie long, their beepers went off, their nurses scurried to and fro to take care of them, and they squawked, \u201cWHAT DID SHE SAY???\u201d <\/p>\n

I had to laugh. \u00a0The whole reason I was sneaking off to the matinee was so I could enjoy the movie without my kids squawking and fighting and asking, \u201cWHAT?? \u00a0WHAT JUST HAPPENED?\u201d<\/p>\n

But I didn\u2019t care. \u00a0I wasn\u2019t responsible for the senior set. \u00a0I could just enjoy the movie.<\/p><\/div>\n

During the movie, I kept thinking, \u201cThis is different from the book! \u00a0The director really changed things!\u201d<\/div>\n

Yet re-reading the book last week, I realized the movie was actually incredibly faithful to the book. \u00a0I just didn\u2019t remember anything from the book. \n

Re-reading, I flipped through pages in awe over various characters and scenes and dramatic moments. \u00a0So many were in the movie. \u00a0So few were in my mind.<\/p>\n

Apparently I have a lot in common with the senior set with which I viewed The Help<\/i>. <\/p>\n

Although this all makes me worry I have early on-set Alzheimers (something my father constantly worried about by the time he was my age\u2013so even that might be genetic), there\u2019s a huge upside to losing my memory. \u00a0I can now look forward to re-reading, and re-reading, and re-reading all my favorite books without the hardest part of reading\u2013finding a book I love. <\/p>\n

I\u2019ll already know I love the book, but won\u2019t remember anything about it. \u00a0I can enjoy each book as much as the first time. <\/p>\n
