Tonight Kai came home with a homework assignment and said I had to help.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve been through 9th<\/sup>grade, I don\u2019t do my kids homework,\u201d said I, the loving, supportive, full of energy Mom of the year.<\/div>\n
\u201cMom!\u00a0 You need to help me\u2014it\u2019s an assignment.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cWhere?\u201d Suspicious.\u00a0 \u201cLet me see the assignment.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cMom!\u00a0 I\u2019m so hurt!\u00a0 You don\u2019t believe me??\u00a0 Nobody else\u2019s parents don\u2019t believe them!\u00a0 This is supposed to be a learning experience between us.\u201d<\/div>\n
She showed me the assignment.\u00a0 She was right.\u00a0 Oops.<\/div>\n
So here\u2019s the assignment:<\/div>\n
\n
Create a list about the 5 attributes you\u2019d want for your kids and grandkids\u2014compare and contrast.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
So I took 5 minutes to write my top thoughts\u2013both easier and harder than I initially thought.<\/div>\n
Here\u2019s\u00a0my list:<\/div>\n
1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Vibrant authentic relationship with God\/Jesus<\/div>\n
2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Healthy, life-giving relationships\u2014family, spouse, friendships, community<\/div>\n
3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Meaningful work that adds value to the world and can sustain them<\/div>\n
4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Healthy life patterns of moderation, exercise (mind, body, spirit, emotion), rest, work& fun<\/div>\n
5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A joyful sense of gratitude at the abundance they\u2019re given that leads to generosity, hospitality, fruitful stewardship and a sense of responsibility for those who aren\u2019t as blessed.<\/div>\n
Here\u2019s Kai\u2019s:<\/div>\n
1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Love of reading-believing a good book can be better than television<\/div>\n
2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Really bonding relationships with friends\u2014loving them, being supportive<\/div>\n
3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Compassion towards everything and everyone\u2014being empathetic<\/div>\n
4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Being able to have perspective on life\u2014seeing the good and being able to deal with the bad<\/div>\n
5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The ability to be humble and modest<\/div>\n
\u201cWow!\u00a0 Yours are so deep compared to mine,\u201d said Kai when I read mine aloud.<\/div>\n
\u201cWell I\u2019ve had years to think about it,\u201d I said.\u00a0 Pretty much the sum total of my parenting years in fact.<\/div>\n
She laughed. \u201cI knew you\u2019d have the God piece. My friends all think you\u2019re super religious and super cheap.\u201d\u00a0 Apparently,\u00a0one<\/em>\u00a0friend thinks it\u2019s funny that I took them out for lunch because my Groupon was expiring that day.\u00a0\u00a0I<\/em>\u00a0like to think that\u2019s frugal and generous at the same time.<\/div>\n
Her list made me smile\u2014I\u00a0guess Scott and I\u00a0preach about reading, friendship, perspective and compassion more regularly than grandiose visions of\u00a0the good life\u2014but it\u2019s good to see that she\u2019s absorbed something!\u00a0 I\u2019ll take \u201cbelieving a good book is better than television\u201d any day!<\/div>\n
