In several hours, the kids and I fly to LA for Tuanapalooza 2012\u2013a Disney cruise to celebrate my father\u2019s 80th birthday with all of my family. \u00a0Scott, unfortunately, is the lone \u201cTuan Spawn\u201d unable to make it because of his huge professional conference in Las Vegas\u2013he\u2019s on the board, running for chair, has to politic, etc.<\/p>\n

All week I\u2019ve been asking the kids to pack. \u00a0I\u2019ve been packing myself. \u00a0It\u2019s winter here in Boston so none of us are wearing our summer clothes. \u00a0So why was there still a clothes\/shoes\/bathing suit\/I-can\u2019t-find-my-favorite-swim-shirt frenzy last night?<\/p>\n

I made matters worse when I decided to take Ling shopping for a new dress yesterday afternoon. \u00a0Remember the Love Boat<\/i> TV series? \u00a0I always wondered why Julie wore ball gowns for dinner. \u00a0Turns out there\u2019s a \u201cformal wear\u201d dinner, a \u201csemi-formal\u201d dinner, and pirate night! <\/p>\n

How\u2019s a girl to pack? <\/p>\n

Tank tops, shorts and swimwear are never allowed at dinner, where we\u2019re encouraged to wear \u201ccruise casual\u201d when we\u2019re not dressed like Love Boat Julie or Jack Sparrow. <\/p>\n

Ling, at 5\u20199 1\/2\u2033, owns two dresses, both of which end at what looks like a foot above her knee. \u00a0She and her sister think they look fine. \u00a0Scott, my parents and I don\u2019t. \u00a0At TJ Maxx we pulled out about 45 dresses, I left her to try them on while shuttling Kai to piano, and after 3 hours, we found 2 Calvin Klein dresses that are cute, more modest, and both under $30! <\/p>\n

Kai claimed that she had no proper shoes, so I capitulated and bought her a pair of 4 inch espadrilles from Payless. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou know that you\u2019re going to look 6 feet tall,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care.\u201d said she.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know if it was wise to buy a 13 year old 4 inch high sandals, but oh well, I had no more energy to find age-appropriate footwear. <\/p>\n

Scott suggested that the girls design T-shirts for the cruise. \u00a0Here\u2019s what they came up with:<\/p>\n
