I especially like his book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nine-Lives-Search-Vintage-Departures\/dp\/0307474461\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nine Lives: In Search of the Sacred in Modern India<\/a><\/em>. His chapter in that book about a Jain nun provides a great introduction to Jainism in an engaging way.<\/p>\n<p>Dalrymple\u2019s travel articles about India for British newspapers like the Guardian and the Telegraph provide wonderful glimpses into different aspects of India\u2019s sacred culture.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In J<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/travel\/destinations\/asia\/india\/721752\/India-Journey-to-the-centre-of-the-world.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">ourney to the Center of the World<\/a>, Dalrymple considers the significance of the Ganges River. \u00a0Describing the Ganges, one of his sources notes: \u00a0\u201cWhen a Westerner looks at the Ganges he sees only a river. But we Hindus, we see a goddess: something divine that comes down from heaven and brings life to our India.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/2\/5c699358-358f-11e2-bd77-00144feabdc0.html#axzz32e0xi9TG\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u00a0Treasure Among Tree Trunks<\/a>, \u00a0Dalrymple examines the life of \u00a0the 18th-century painter Nainsukh. \u00a0He notes that \u201cmany of his works are now in the world\u2019s leading museums, but murals influenced by his innovations can still be found on temple walls all over the Himalayan foothills.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/travel\/2005\/apr\/02\/india.guardiansaturdaytravelsection\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pallava dynasty temples of Tamil Nadu<\/a>, Dalrymple considers the 8th century Pallava kings who are known \u201cfor their brilliance as poets and patrons of the arts as they were for their success on the battlefield.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Studying Hinduism? \u00a0Want to understand the sacred culture of India?
