Previous research relied on changes in blood pressure or even a participant questionnaire. This government funded study looked at the effects of meditation on stress and discovered a real biological change.<\/p>\n<p>This is probably old news to most Buddhists who have been practicing meditation for a long time. Two years ago <a href=\"http:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/28\/how-meditation-may-change-the-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The New York Times <\/a>reported that M.R.I. brain scans showed \u201cincreased gray matter in the hippocampus, an area important for learning and memory.\u201d They also showed \u201ca reduction of gray matter in the amygdala, a region connected to anxiety and stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For that study, participants learned to how practice mindfulness meditation, which is an ancient Buddhist practice and came to the United States in the 1970\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Here are links to several other stories about meditation and the brain.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/what-happens-to-the-brain-when-you-meditate-and-how-it-1202533314\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Life Hacker <\/a>has an interesting story that also explains meditation.<\/li>\n<li>Psychology Today has a story called <a href=\"http:\/\/this%20is%20your%20brain%20on%20meditation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">This is Your Brain on Meditation.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The Huffington Post has story called <a href=\"http:\/\/how%20you%20can%20train%20your%20mind%20to%20do%20the%20impossible\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">How You Can Train Your Mind To Do The Impossible.<\/a>\u00a0It also includes this short video clip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New research shows that meditation causes physiological change in the brain.
