<\/iframe><\/p>\nSikhs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-27757187\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">marched in London this week<\/a> to mark the anniversary of the storming of the Golden Temple in 1984. \u00a0 \u00a0What happened 30 years ago and what exactly is the Golden Temple and what makes its golden?<\/p>\nThe Golden Temple<\/strong><\/span> is \u00a0Sikhism\u2019s holiest shrine. \u00a0It\u2019s located in Amristar in the state of Punjab in the northwestern part of India.<\/p>\nConstruction of the temple began in 1604. Much of the foundation is made of marble while the outside is plated in gold.<\/p>\nHere\u2019s an amusing and engaging review of the temple that students might enjoy.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qiz2TVPN9TU?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"360\" height=\"215\"><\/iframe><\/p>\nWhat happened in 1984?<\/strong><\/span> <\/strong>Sikhs clashed with the government of Indira Gandhi over issues of discrimination. Indian troops surrounded the Golden Temple which was held by Sikh militants. Indian troops eventually stormed the temple and over 300 people were killed.
