{"id":3329,"date":"2014-06-28T07:35:15","date_gmt":"2014-06-28T12:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/worldreligions\/?p=3329"},"modified":"2014-08-22T16:07:45","modified_gmt":"2014-08-22T21:07:45","slug":"religious-freedom-and-the-bald-eagle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/worldreligions\/2014\/06\/religious-freedom-and-the-bald-eagle.html","title":{"rendered":"Religious Freedom and the Bald Eagle"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/embed.ted.com\/talks\/aaron_huey.html\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What happens when native American spirituality collides with an American national symbol?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2012, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service gave the northern Arapaho in Wyoming a permit to kill two bald eagles. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2012\/03\/14\/wyoming-native-american-tribe-gets-rare-permit-to-kill-bald-eagles\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">According to this story in the Associated Press<\/a>, \u00a0the permit was \u201cissued after the Northern Arapaho Tribe filed a federal lawsuit last year contending the refusal to issue such permits violates tribal members\u2019 religious freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many native American tribes use eagle parts, especially feathers, as part of religious ceremonies. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/03\/19\/148919990\/wyoming-tribe-wins-right-to-hunt-two-bald-eagles\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">An Arapaho elder told NPR in 2012<\/a> that \u201chis tribe uses eagle-tail fans and eagle-bone whistles in several tribal ceremonies and settings, including sun dances, powwows and sweat lodges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But many conservationists oppose the permit because bald eagles are an endangered species.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Who\u2019s right? The Native Americans or the conservationists?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This might be an interesting debate for religion students when we cover indigenous religions.
