Fazeela Siddiqui, program manager for Women\u2019s Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality (WISE), put together a list of ten of the most important Muslim women from the 7th century to the present for the Huffington Post<\/a>. \u201cContrary to popular belief,\u201d she notes, \u201cMuslim women have served as revolutionary and heroic leaders.\u201d Some, she says, \u201chave been jailed, ridiculed and harangued for their activism; yet, their strength and faith always persevered.\u201dYou can see a <\/a>slideshow<\/a> with pictures <\/a>and a brief biography of each of the ten women.<\/p>\n

Rab\u2019ia al-Adawiyya,<\/a> Iraq, (717-801 C.E.): set \u00a0forth the doctrine of \u201cDivine Love?\u201d Here is a link to some of her poetry<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
- Fatima al-Fihri<\/a>:, (Morocco, unknown-880C.E.): founded of the oldest degree-granting university in the world?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
  - Nana Asma\u2019u<\/a>, (Nigeria, (1793-1864): \u00a0was one of the first advocates for Muslim women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    - Sultan Raziyya<\/a>, India, (1206-1240): She was a Sultan of Delhi from 1236 to 1240. In the 19th century, she traveled throughout the Middle East and northern Africa educating women in poor and rural regions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      - Laleh Bakhtiar<\/a>, USA, 1938-Present): Her \u201cThe Sublime Quran\u201d is first translation by an American of the Quran into English.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Shirin Ebadi<\/a>, Iran, (1947-Present): the first Muslim woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting democracy and human rights in Iran.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Daisy Khan<\/a>, (USA, 1958-Present): founded the Women\u2019s Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality (WISE) which works for women\u2019s rights in Islam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
