\nMyriam Francois Cerrah, writing for The Independen<\/a>t, thinks that Lady Gaga\u2019s burqa is good for Muslim women and makes an interesting argument. Noting that many have criticized Lady Gaga for shamelessly exploiting \u201corientalist fetishes to promote herself,\u201d Cerrah thinks that the singer\u2019s headcovering might \u201craise a smile with many Muslim women.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI relish the fact her act subverts the monopoly on meaning typically associated with the face veil as the evil imposition of male domination,\u201d \u00a0she argues. She also notes that \u201cGaga is appropriating Islamic symbols and in so doing, associating her confident sexual identity and power with women typically assumed to be passive and voiceless victims.\u201d<\/p>\n

But others clearly disagree. Here\u2019s a story from Policymic called \u201cLady Gaga\u2019s \u2018Burqa\u2019 is Supposed to Empower Muslim Women, But Does the Opposite<\/a>.\u201d And from ThinkProgress, you can read this story called \u201cLady Gaga\u2019s New Song \u2018Burqa (Aura)\u2019 Is Further Proof She\u2019s Not A Very Good Political Artist.<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s another eloquent voice critical of Lady Gaga by Umema Aimen for the Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0suggesting that Gaga\u2019s song \u201cBurqa\u201d sends the wrong signal. Aimen notes that she like some of the song \u201cbut then you lost me when you proceeded to turn such a sacred symbol of my religion into an exotic costume.
