Today, my students in the United States discussed human rights and religious freedom during a video conference with students at a school in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Our featured speaker, \u00a0a human rights officer\u00a0with the U.S. Baha\u2019i Office of Public Affairs in Washington, DC, spoke to us from New York. Her family\u00a0fled Iran during the 1979 revolution.\u00a0She discussed the history of Baha\u2019i persecution and explained her efforts\u00a0on behalf of that community.<\/p>\n

Face to Faith<\/a>, an organization developed by Prime Minister Tony Blair to bring together students of\u00a0different cultures\u00a0and religions, organizes the conferences through a video conferencing service called Bluejean<\/a>s.<\/p>\n

The questions\u00a0from students\u00a0at both schools were fascinating, as was the speaker\u2019s answers and follow-up discussion. For example,\u00a0one student\u00a0asked Ms. Kourosh \u00a0if \u00a0she had ever been to Iran. \u00a0She said that she had never been to the country and that it would be dangerous for her to go. Another student asked how the Baha\u2019i are persecuted today. Ms. Kourosh explained that over 100 Baha\u2019i are currently imprisoned in Iran and that many suffer solitary confinement and physical abuse.<\/p>\n

Ms. Kourosh ended the conference by telling our students that \u00a0we are all ambassadors for human rights. She urged the students to educate themselves and mentioned a new documentary about\u00a0\u00a0Baha\u2019i persecution called \u201cto Light a Candle.\u201d It premieres in February but you can see the trailer here.<\/a><\/p>\n
