The word is that the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) may be coming back home to Rome after a long journey through the wilderness. If true, I think that it’s great news. (more…) Read more

Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of the books Fooled By Randomness and The Black Swan, once said the following about fasting: The reason fasting in its various forms is not practiced as the best medicine is because industry has not (yet) managed to make a profit from it. Try to generalize this very, very simple point to other substractive treatments and you will understand what we got ourselves into with modernity. You’re about to be proved wrong, Taleb. Ghetto Catholicism, that is. You see, we Catholics aren’t like the Amish, or other religious sects that hole up and pretend the rest of the world doesn’t exist. We don’t just hunker down in our own enclaves and let the rest of the world go to hell in a hand basket. That isn’t what we’ve been called to do. And I argue, the day after Divine Mercy Sunday, that sticking to our religious knitting as Catholics isn’t in keeping with... Read more

A truth about us as human beings is that we desire justice and not mercy. Yet we have been taught that God desires mercy. He said so himself. And today, Divine Mercy Sunday, we are reminded that Our Lord’s mercy is larger than not only all of our sins, but of all of the sins of the entire world. Past, present, and future. Need more proof that Ron Paul is Cyber Monday (huge on the internet, but small in the ballot box)? Just check out the latest press release from his campaign HQ. But whatever you do, DO NOT click on the links they provided to Rasmussen in an attempt to verify their claim. Despite the fact that this man has won no states in any of the Republican primaries, they declare the following… (more…) Read more

Earlier today, I shared the latest from the USCCB’s stance on religious liberty. Bishop William Lori’s Ad-hoc Committee on Religious Freedom’s statement was long, and involved. From what I read, it seemed well thought out, above board, and non-partisan. It even dipped into the history of religious freedom in our country, though more historical background of this type needs to be shared with the faithful and all citizens. (more…) Read more

Thomas L. MacDonald, one of my newest Patheos Catholic portal classmates, brings all of the above together in the tragicomic opera that is the the unmoored modern Catholic. I say unmoored, but that word assumes someone was on a ship in the first place. Perhaps “born in captivity” would be a better description. (more…) Read more

You would have to have been living under a rock not to know that religious liberty has come under fire here in the United States. Those who believe that the Catholic Church is wrong to get involved in the politics surrounding the HHS Mandate, for instance, have unwittingly bought into the argument that there is a “wall of separation” between Church and State, and that one should be completely separate from the other. FYI…I won’t be taking the time to post on Google+ any longer. Today’s change of format there prompted me, but it’s been simmering in my mind for a while. It’s like this, in a toe-tapping nutshell, Because the lights may be on over at Google+, but nobody is at home.  There are plenty of crickets chirping over there, though. Google+  is like the neutron bomb of social media.  There, I said it. Au revoir, l’enfant terrible! Read more

Nobody saw this matchup coming, huh? Former senator Rick Santorum is announcing the suspension of his campaign this afternoon. The Washington Post has the scoop. And the Huffington Post has reactions from Mitt Romney and the RNC. Sure, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich are still in the race. But Gingrich has all but stopped campaigning and Ron Paul is sort of like Cyber Monday. In other words, he’s huge on the internet, but small in the ballot box. (more…) Read more
