It takes shots at the Inquisition (\u201ctwisting on racks\u201d) and offers a vision of the afterlife that is antic, caustic, not Catholic. Still, and although he died a drunken mess when I was but two, I have always loved Thomas\u2019s poetry, ever since Mr. Griswold taught us \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigeye.com\/fernhill.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fern Hill<\/a>\u201d in eighth grade.<br>\n<a name=\"more\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><br>\nThomas More was a great believer in meditating on the Four Last Things: death, judgment, hell, and heaven. Here\u2019s an opportunity. Whether it is ironic or positive, or both, \u201cAnd Death Shall Have No Dominion\u201d is a fitting poem for this time of year, don\u2019t you think? In such beauty God reveals Himself.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>And Death Shall Have No Dominion<\/strong><\/span><br>\n<em>And death shall have no dominion.<\/em><br>\n<em>Dead men naked they shall be one<\/em><br>\n<em>With the man in the wind and the west moon;<\/em><br>\n<em>When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone,<\/em><br>\n<em>They shall have stars at elbow and foot;<\/em><br>\n<em>Though they go mad they shall be sane,<\/em><br>\n<em>Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again;<\/em><br>\n<em>Though lovers be lost love shall not;<\/em><br>\n<em>And death shall have no dominion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And death shall have no dominion.<\/em><br>\n<em>Under the windings of the sea<\/em><br>\n<em>They lying long shall not die windily;<\/em><br>\n<em>Twisting on racks when sinews give way,<\/em><br>\n<em>Strapped to a wheel, yet they shall not break;<\/em><br>\n<em>Faith in their hands shall snap in two,<\/em><br>\n<em>And the unicorn evils run them through;<\/em><br>\n<em>Split all ends up they shan\u2019t crack;<\/em><br>\n<em>And death shall have no dominion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And death shall have no dominion.<\/em><br>\n<em>No more may gulls cry at their ears<\/em><br>\n<em>Or waves break loud on the seashores;<\/em><br>\n<em>Where blew a flower may a flower no more<\/em><br>\n<em>Lift its head to the blows of the rain;<\/em><br>\n<em>Though they be mad and dead as nails,<\/em><br>\n<em>Heads of the characters hammer through daisies;<\/em><br>\n<em>Break in the sun till the sun breaks down,<\/em><br>\n<em>And death shall have no dominion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve had a chance to read it to yourself, listen to Dylan Thomas reading it.<br>\n<em><\/em><br>\n<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nsVvxWeOAsc\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nsVvxWeOAsc<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/6738513599344023043-1080372773393291916?l=yimcatholic.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know, Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914\u20131953) was an agnostic, and this poem hardly offers a Christian world view.
