\"\"<\/a>I know, Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914\u20131953) was an agnostic, and this poem hardly offers a Christian world view. It takes shots at the Inquisition (\u201ctwisting on racks\u201d) and offers a vision of the afterlife that is antic, caustic, not Catholic. Still, and although he died a drunken mess when I was but two, I have always loved Thomas\u2019s poetry, ever since Mr. Griswold taught us \u201cFern Hill<\/a>\u201d in eighth grade.
\n<\/a>
\nThomas More was a great believer in meditating on the Four Last Things: death, judgment, hell, and heaven. Here\u2019s an opportunity. Whether it is ironic or positive, or both, \u201cAnd Death Shall Have No Dominion\u201d is a fitting poem for this time of year, don\u2019t you think? In such beauty God reveals Himself.<\/p>\n

And Death Shall Have No Dominion<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnd death shall have no dominion.<\/em>
\nDead men naked they shall be one<\/em>
\nWith the man in the wind and the west moon;<\/em>
\nWhen their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone,<\/em>
\nThey shall have stars at elbow and foot;<\/em>
\nThough they go mad they shall be sane,<\/em>
\nThough they sink through the sea they shall rise again;<\/em>
\nThough lovers be lost love shall not;<\/em>
\nAnd death shall have no dominion.<\/em><\/p>\n

And death shall have no dominion.<\/em>
\nUnder the windings of the sea<\/em>
\nThey lying long shall not die windily;<\/em>
\nTwisting on racks when sinews give way,<\/em>
\nStrapped to a wheel, yet they shall not break;<\/em>
\nFaith in their hands shall snap in two,<\/em>
\nAnd the unicorn evils run them through;<\/em>
\nSplit all ends up they shan\u2019t crack;<\/em>
\nAnd death shall have no dominion.<\/em><\/p>\n

And death shall have no dominion.<\/em>
\nNo more may gulls cry at their ears<\/em>
\nOr waves break loud on the seashores;<\/em>
\nWhere blew a flower may a flower no more<\/em>
\nLift its head to the blows of the rain;<\/em>
\nThough they be mad and dead as nails,<\/em>
\nHeads of the characters hammer through daisies;<\/em>
\nBreak in the sun till the sun breaks down,<\/em>
\nAnd death shall have no dominion.<\/em><\/p>\n
