Full credit for the paraphrase embedded in the title above goes to priest, and poet extraordinaire, Gerard Manly Hopkins, SJ. I thought of it today as I saw photographs of the Catholic HEART Work Camp<\/a> trip that two of my children are on this week.<\/p>\n

Hopkin\u2019s poem is entitled God\u2019s Grandeur,<\/em> and it isn\u2019t too long for you to bear.<\/p>\n

THE WORLD is charged with the grandeur of God.
\nIt will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
\nIt gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
\nCrushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
\nGenerations have trod, have trod, have trod;
\nAnd all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
\nAnd wears man\u2019s smudge and shares man\u2019s smell: the soil
\nIs bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.<\/p>\n

And for all this, nature is never spent;
\nThere lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
\nAnd though the last lights off the black West went
\nOh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs\u2014
\nBecause the Holy Ghost over the bent
\nWorld broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Would you fault me for seeing God\u2019s grandeur as our children go out into the world as His hands, His face, and His heart? By doing His works of mercy, see, they are transformed in ways they never expected.<\/p>\n
