Watching the Red Sox try to hang on in their series against the Angels, I come up against a Blackberry ad using \u201cAll You Need is Love\u201d as theme music. Love? I wonder. No, not all you need.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

But \u201cMy Generation,\u201d same as The Who\u2019s, has been humming songs like this since the 1960s. They tell us, and we believe, don\u2019t we, that we need nothing but someone to love us, or, same difference, \u201cSomebody to Love,\u201d the first big hit for Jefferson Airplane.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Why exactly did Crosby, Stills, and Nash tell us to \u201cCarry On,\u201d the first track on this album? Because \u201clove is coming,\u201d of course. \u201cLove is coming to us all.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Janis Joplin\u2019s only #1 hit was \u201cMe and Bobby McGee,\u201d Kris Kristofferson\u2019s bluesy ballad of romantic love. Kristofferson was Joplin\u2019s \u201clover,\u201d but how much good did that do her? Hey, but maybe \u201cFeelin\u2019 good is good enough for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The\u00a0 Doors\u2019 1967 super hit was \u201cLight My Fire,\u201d about the hottest sort of love, baby. Which didn\u2019t do a lot of good for Jim Morrison, now, did it?<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Is it any surprise that the biggest, longest-lasting hit of the 1960s was \u201c(Can\u2019t Get No) Satisfaction\u201d? Well, not really, no.<\/p>\n

Somehow, I end up at 1st Corinthians 13, which must be the Biblical text used most often in weddings since the 1960s. \u201cThe greatest of these is love?\u201d Sure thing. But does anyone ever give a thought at any of those profoundly romantic moments about the two cardinal virtues that come first?\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Sox lose . . . What\u2019s a good Catholic boy to do? . . . Root for the Angels, of course.<\/p>\n
