Walking through doorways robbed my memory, or so says Professor Radvansky in this piece just published in <em>Notre Dame News.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We\u2019ve all experienced it: The frustration of entering a room and forgetting what we were going to do. Or get. Or find.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>New research from University of Notre Dame Psychology Professor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/psychology.nd.edu\/faculty\/faculty-by-alpha\/g-a-radvansky\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Gabriel Radvansky<\/a> suggests that passing through doorways is the cause of these memory lapses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEntering or exiting through a doorway serves as an \u2018event boundary\u2019 in the mind, which separates episodes of activity and files them away,\u201d Radvansky explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecalling the decision or activity that was made in a different room is difficult because it has been compartmentalized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study was published recently in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandf.co.uk\/journals\/pp\/02724987.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Conducting three experiments in both real and virtual environments, Radvansky\u2019s subjects \u2013 all college students \u2013 performed memory tasks while crossing a room and while exiting a doorway.<\/p>\n<p>In the first experiment, subjects used a virtual environment and moved from one room to another, selecting an object on a table and exchanging it for an object at a different table. They did the same thing while simply moving across a room but not crossing through a doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Radvansky found that the subjects forgot more after walking through a doorway compared to moving the same distance across a room, suggesting that the doorway or \u201cevent boundary\u201d impedes one\u2019s ability to retrieve thoughts or decisions made in a different room.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsinfo.nd.edu\/news\/27476-walking-through-doorways-causes-forgetting-new-research-shows\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Go read the rest.<\/a> Me losing track of my coffee cup was a running joke when I was Sir Topham Hat at Crack O\u2019 Dawn Trucking.
