\u201cI want the series to go out beyond the walls of the Church,\u201d he said in an Aug. 10 interview. \u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re so happy it\u2019s going to be on public television.\u201d<\/i> In the episode on the Virgin Mary, for instance, the crew traveled to the Holy Land, France, Mexico and \u201caround the world to see where the Marian faith shows up.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe approach I used,\u201d he said, \u201cwas just to go to places around the world that visually show the themes I\u2019m talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n Fr. Barron said that the series comes at time when the U.S. is going through what he believes to be \u201cthe darkest period in the history of the American Catholic Church,\u201d and that the \u201cwrong\u201d people are telling the story of what the Church actually is.<\/p>\n He pointed to the secular media\u2019s depiction of the Church \u201cas the place where the sex abuse scandal happened,\u201d a narrative that he finds \u201cso tiresome and counterproductive.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI think Catholics from the inside have to tell a much richer, broader, fascinating story,\u201d Fr. Barron said, stressing the importance of not allowing the Church to be \u201creduced to the sex abuse scandal.\u201d<\/p>\n He noted that during challenging times in Church history, the saints \u201ctended to come forward in the times of crisis and bring things back to their evangelical basics.\u201d Go read the rest.<\/a><\/p>\n Check your local listings, and set your DVR\u2019s!
