Christianity\u2019s Eight Beatitudes, or blessings, are a beautiful follow-up to the Ten Commandments. Christ\u2019s blessings are as relevent now as they were 2,000 years ago to people suffering under Roman occupation. The values of this world \u2013 material wealth, fame, political power \u2013 often directly contradict the values of the Body of Christ. When we begin to understand that Christ is with us right this minute, we do not need to wait for our reward in heaven; our joy begins now because we see how Christ is imbedded in the reality of our daily lives.
<\/a><\/p>\n

Blessed are the poor in spirit,<\/div>\n
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.<\/div>\n
Blessed are they who mourn,<\/div>\n
for they will be comforted.<\/div>\n
Blessed are the meek,<\/div>\n
for they will inherit the land.<\/div>\n
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,<\/div>\n
for they will be satisfied.<\/div>\n
Blessed are the merciful,<\/div>\n
for they will be shown mercy.<\/div>\n
Blessed are the clean of heart,<\/div>\n
for they will see God.<\/div>\n
Blessed are the peacemakers,<\/div>\n
for they will be called children of God.<\/div>\n
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,<\/div>\n
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.<\/div>\n
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you<\/div>\n
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.<\/div>\n
Rejoice and be glad,<\/div>\n
for your reward will be great in heaven.<\/a><\/div>\n

Today in St.\u00a0 Peter\u2019s Square, Pope Benedict XVI told thousands of young people this\u00a0 Sermon on the Mount is directed to people in all ages<\/a> \u201cand yet it demands discipleship and can be understood and lived out only by following Jesus and accompanying him on his journey,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe beatitudes are the new program of life, to free ourselves from the false values of the world and open ourselves to the true good, present and future.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen, in fact, God consoles,\u201d said the Pope, \u201che satiates the hunger of justice, dries the tears of the afflicted.\u201d This consolation rewards every person in a sensitive way and \u201copens the Kingdom of Heaven.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
