Here is a late-breaking poem for the day. I stumbled upon it while combing through my favorite on-line library<\/a>. There is all kinds of undiscovered treasure lurking in the books there. Just waiting for you to break out your torch and look around.<\/p>\n

Ever feel like being a Catholic Christian is a battle? Sure you do, because we were never promised a rose garden<\/a>, right? This poem may \u00a0either scare you straight or help you see the light. Written by Louise Imogen Guiney, my inner (and outer) warrior read this and my compass headed to true north once again.
<\/a>
Louise was Catholic too, born in Boston and educated in a convent school in Rhode Island. I don\u2019t know a lot about her, but the good folks over at Poetry Foundation<\/i> have a decent biography on her<\/a>. The editor there writes that, <\/p>\n

Guiney is also praised for the posthumously published Recusant Poets (1939)<\/b>, an anthology of poetry by Catholic authors from the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries that she coedited with Geoffrey Bliss.<\/i><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be looking to see if I can find that book shortly. <\/p>\n

The Kings<\/b><\/i>

<\/i><\/a><\/div>\n

A man said unto his Angel: <\/i>
\u201cMy spirits are fallen low, <\/i>
And I cannot carry this battle: <\/i>
O brother! where might I go? <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThe terrible Kings are on me <\/i>
With spears that are deadly bright; <\/i>
Against me so from the cradle <\/i>
Do fate and my fathers fight.\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n

Then said to the man his Angel: <\/i>
\u201cThou wavering, witless soul, <\/i>
Back to the ranks! What matter <\/i>
To win or to lose the whole, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cAs judged by the little judges <\/i>
Who hearken not well, nor see? <\/i>
Not thus, by the outer issue, <\/i>
The Wise shall interpret thee. <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThy will is the sovereign measure <\/i>
And only events of things: <\/i>
The puniest heart, defying, <\/i>
Were stronger than all these Kings. <\/i><\/p>\n

Mind\u2019s Doubt, and Bodily Pain, <\/i>
And pallid Thirst of the Spirit <\/i>
