Lord Williams said religious believers should be wary of complaining about their treatment in the Western world, with those claiming they are \u201cpersecuted\u201d making him \u201cvery uneasy\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He added the level of \u201cnot being taken very seriously\u201d or \u201cbeing made fun of\u201d in Britain and the United States is not comparable to the \u201cmurderous hostility\u201d faced by others in different parts of the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, he urged those who complain of ill-treatment for their beliefs in Britain to \u201cgrow up\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lord Williams, who stood down from his role as Archbishop of Canterbury at the end of 2012 and is now Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, said his perspective had been drawn from meeting believers from all faiths suffering around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWhen you have any contact with real persecuted minorities you learn to use the word persecuted very chastely,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPersecution is not being made to feel mildly uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n
