<\/a><\/p>\n\u2026.and never left.<\/p>\n
Ok, I did, but not for a long time.<\/p>\n
After the test, the radiologist came in and told me they would be admitting me to the ER immediately because the CT scan showed that abscesses had formed as a result of the diverticulitis and if they weren\u2019t treated, well, bad things would happen.<\/p>\n
I asked the doc how long I would be there.<\/p>\n
He said he didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n
I asked if we were talking about hours? Days? Weeks?<\/p>\n
He said he didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n
Oh, and did I mention my phone died right after the CT scan so I couldn\u2019t call my wife and tell her what was going on?<\/p>\n
It was awful.<\/p>\n
Luckily, I was eventually able to get in touch with her and didn\u2019t have to be in the ER too long. The docs found a room for me, got me hooked up to an IV\u2026and told me I was going to be there for a while.<\/p>\n
Probably 3 or 4 days.<\/p>\n
Well, that\u2019s what the first doc said.<\/p>\n
The next doc I saw said the infection was so bad they were already making long term plans to chop out part of my colon.<\/p>\n
I was more than a bit stunned and, honestly, incredibly overwhelmed. I\u2019ve never had major surgery before and the prospect of having part of my body taken out was, well, scary.<\/p>\n
Combined with the thought of what the heck I was going to do for childcare (because my wife is in residency and all of our family lives a million miles away), I was really on edge.<\/p>\n
It was awful.<\/p>\n
But things got better.<\/p>\n
Thankfully, I\u2019ve got a great family and my wife is in a fantastic residency program. Her program director got somebody to cover for her so she was able to stay with me in the hospital and my amazing family dropped everything and drove up to Connecticut from Tennessee (and Virginia) to help out with the baby.<\/p>\n
And the next day things continued to get better.<\/p>\n
While I had my extended stay in the hospital confirmed, the docs were no longer talking about chopping out any body parts. Just lots of antibiotics and no solid food for a while.<\/p>\n
Praise be to God.<\/p>\n
For reals.<\/p>\n
Long story short, it wasn\u2019t nearly as bad as it could have been. I did have to spend 4 days in the hospital hooked to an IV with a drain in my abdomen while being tortured with crappy hospital food, but I escaped the surgeon\u2019s scalpel.<\/p>\n
On Monday, they sent me home with a ton of drugs to take and yesterday I finally got that awful drain taken out.<\/p>\n
So, things continue to get better.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m definitely on the mend and definitely feeling a lot better than I did last week, but I\u2019m sure it\u2019ll be a while until I\u2019m back to 100%.<\/p>\n
But that\u2019s ok. At least I get to keep all of my body parts.<\/p>\n
Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know why I disappeared this week and assure you that I should be back blogging soon. Hopefully next week if all continues to go well.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, I covet any thoughts, prayers, or good vibrations you\u2019d be willing to send my way.<\/p>\n
