In the ongoing shock and awe campaign that is church evangelism, the latest salvo has been launched by a church in Folsom, CA\u2026..<\/p>\n

The signs around Folsom, Calif., said \u201cChurch Sucks,\u201d but the man who put them up said the message behind them is more complex than it seems.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just inflammatory enough to get attention and yet we have something to say,\u201d Stu Streeter, the man who put them up, told\u00a0ABC affiliate KXTV in Sacramento.<\/p>\n

Streeter is the pastor of Disciples Church, a small storefront in a strip mall, and he said the signs and a newspaper ad campaign that carried the same message were created for people who don\u2019t go to church.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis campaign for us is just a simple way to call out the elephant in the room and say, \u2018Hey, maybe you don\u2019t go to church because you\u2019ll think you\u2019ll be an outsider or you think power will be abused,\u201d Streeter said. \u201cWell, it doesn\u2019t have to be that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

In all he put up 200 of the signs around the city, and some he put on trailers that he drove around to get the message out.<\/p>\n

The signs advertised the church\u2019s website, which makes the pastor\u2019s perhaps irreverent reverence a bit more clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cChurch Sucks, sometimes. But we\u2019re not content with that,\u201d the website says. \u201cJesus didn\u2019t suck, and neither should His church. And you\u2019re invited to help!\u201d<\/p>\n

Maybe it\u2019s just me, but this whole \u201clet\u2019s see how superficially shocking and\u00a0controversial\u00a0we can be in order to get people to come to church\u201d thing is getting a bit old. Not to mention a bit unnecessary.<\/p>\n

I always found the gospel to be pretty shocking by itself. You\u2019ve got: virgin birth, miracles, casting out demons, \u201ceat of my body and drink of my blood\u201d, \u201csell everything you have and give it to the poor\u201d, crucifixion, resurrection, and a God that lets His people kill Him in order to save them.<\/p>\n
