Ok, to be fair the exact phrase \u201cI think children who disrespect their parents should be put to death\u201d does not come out of the mouth of crazy \u201cPastor\u201d Steve.<\/p>\n
HOWEVER<\/em>, the argument he is clearly making is that Levitical law should be followed instead of \u201csecular law\u201d because it is \u201cGod\u2019s law\u201d and therefore better than the secular law of 17th century England.<\/p>\n Which is obviously an air tight argument.<\/p>\n According to \u201cPastor\u201d Steve under \u201cGod\u2019s law\u201d there are 11 crimes punishable by death. Among them: murder, rape, adultery,\u00a0bestiality, being gay, idolatry, witchcraft, blasphemy, and\u2026..disrespecting your parents. (Those were the ones he mentions\u2026.turns out violating the Sabbath was also punishable by death.)<\/p>\n While I would like to believe\/hope that \u201cPastor\u201d Steve doesn\u2019t really think children should be executed for disrespecting their parents, there is no way around the fact that what he is preaching is the idea that America needs to \u201cget back to her biblical roots\u201d like it was in \u201cthe good ole days\u201d and start following \u201cGod\u2019s law\u201d as they supposedly did in 17th century Massachusetts.<\/p>\n You know who else wants to replace secular law with a fundie version of religious law? The Taliban. And we all know how well that little experiment in Afghanistan worked out.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve never understood fundie preachers who yell and scream about the blood of Jesus that \u201cestablishes a new covenant\u201d and gives them freedom from the law, but who then also try to lift up the \u201cold covenant\u201d violence of the Old Testament as a shining light to be followed.<\/p>\n Why do they not understand that Jesus\u2019 act of the cross was His response to violence? And if I remember the passion narrative correctly, I don\u2019t remember him beating up the Roman soldiers and smashing up the cross.<\/p>\n
