To be fair, the \u201cde-gendering\u201d of Christ in the context of eucharistic theology is a wonderful and fascinating subject.<\/p>\n

The \u201cde-gendering\u201d of Jesus of Nazareth, however, seems like a rather ridiculous cry for attention.<\/p>\n

The debate over female clergy is an extremely important one, but I\u2019ve got to think there are more, um, rational(?) ways of going about it.<\/p>\n

Academic claims Jesus Christ was (possibly) a hermaphrodite<\/h1>\n

Jesus Christ\u2019s gender is something we all know. Isn\u2019t it? Dr Susanna Cornwall, of Manchester University\u2019s Lincoln Theological Institute, has written a paper in which she claims that it is impossible to know whether Jesus was male or female, reported\u00a0The Daily Telegraph<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Called \u201cIntersex & Ontology, A Response to The Church, Women Bishops and Provision,\u201d she says that we can\u2019t say with any certainty which one he was \u2013 and in fact might well have been a hermaphrodite. The fact that he didn\u2019t have children, for example, she claims, makes this all the more persuasive.<\/p>\n

The claims come against a continuing argument about the possibility of women bishops in the Church of England. Cornwall\u2019s paper is designed to make the Church pay more attention to people with intersex conditions, and was written in response to a\u00a0paper arguing against women bishops<\/a>. Commentators are split: is Cornwall blasphemous, or saying something important?<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot know for sure that Jesus was male \u2013 since we do not have a body to examine and analyse \u2013 it can only be that Jesus\u2019 masculine gender role, rather than his male sex, is having to bear the weight of all this authority,\u201d said Dr Cornwall.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
