His new Vertigo Comics miniseries\u00a0Punk Rock Jesus\u00a0<\/em>imagines a futuristic world of 2019 where the birth of a clone of\u00a0Jesus Christ\u00a0is the star of a reality show \u2014 called\u00a0The J2 Project<\/em>\u2014 and, as a teenager complete with Mohawk, rebels against the people and system that created him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think about what would they do if they cloned Jesus? The answer quickly came to me: \u2018Oh, they\u2019d turn it into a reality show. They\u2019d make it more interesting for better ratings and basically this thing would turn into a giant\u00a0Super Bowl\u00a0every day and would just grab the world\u2019s attention.\u2019 It wrote itself, in a sense,\u201d says Murphy, who writes and illustrates\u00a0Punk Rock Jesus<\/em>. (The first issue is out now, and the second is available in comic shops and digitally Aug. 8.)<\/p>\n

The book covers 14 years in the life of Chris, who is born out of a modern-day equivalent to the immaculate conception: Pieces of DNA are scraped off the\u00a0Shroud of Turin, fused with an egg and are inserted into a virgin girl found via nationwide audition.<\/p>\n
