A prayer of lament for the families of Sandy Hook, adapted from Psalm 22.<\/em><\/p>\n

My God, my God, why have you forsaken Sandy Hook?
\nWhy were you so far\u00a0from saving your children,
\nso far from their cries of anguish?
\nMy God, they cried out by day, but you do not answer,
\nby night their parents will find no rest.<\/p>\n

\n

Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
\nyou are the one we are supposed to praise.
\nIn you our ancestors put their trust;
\nthey trusted and you delivered them.
\nTo you they cried out\u00a0and were saved;
\nin you they trusted\u00a0and were not put to shame.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But these parents are broken and barely able to breathe,
\nhow can they praise you?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Do not be far from these families,
\nfor heartbreak and trouble are all around them
\nand there is no one to help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

They are poured out like water,
\nand all their bones are out of joint.
\nTheir hearts have turned to wax;
\nthey have melted from all the pain.
\nTheir mouths\u00a0are dried up like a desert,
\nand their tongue sticks to the roof of their mouths;
\nfor you have laid them down in the dust\u00a0of death.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Hounds of media surround them,
\nlike a pack of villains they encircle them;
\nthey pierce their hearts\u00a0and trample on their souls.
\nAll their pain and grief and loss is on display;
\npeople will stare\u00a0and point at them for days to come.<\/p>\n

But you,\u00a0Lord, do not be far from them.
\nYou are their strength;
\ncome quickly\u00a0to help the families of Sandy Hook.<\/p>\n

Deliver them from the gun,
\ntheir future from the power of the despair.
\nRescue them from the mouth of death;
\nsave them from the darkness that is all around.<\/p>\n

You are the Lord on high,
\nyou can do this.<\/p>\n

Do not forsake your people.<\/p>\n

Amen.<\/p>\n
