More Than an Indictment: Walter Scott and the Scourge of Racism

Let us be clear: we are not living in the old South, and police officers are not the enemy of justice. White rage and the power brokers who exploit it for political gain are our real enemy. While we will not defeat them with a single indictment, we can use this opportunity to widen and deepen fusion coalitions, refusing to buy into the politics of fear.

Just as the terrorist attack on the church in Birmingham, Alabama happened after the high-water mark of the March on Washington in 1963, killing those four precious little girls, the increase in violence against black men today is a sign that a diverse, moral movement is building power. Even as we insist on justice for each victim, we must also continue to build coalitions across old dividing lines. There's no better way to insist that black lives matter than to build up fusion coalitions that can not only change police policy but also transform the culture in which black and brown children are born suspect.
