Regulating the Gods: A Hellenist on Hubris

In the past year I have realized that though she may have died, she is still watching over our family, still keeping us together, and her devotion to us does not waver.

There are other signs that she is helping us. I was given her rolling pin, which is laughable if you knew what a horrible baker I am. I could cook, but not bake. So why would she want me to have her rolling pin? Out of a desire to feel close to my grandmother, I got the rolling pin out and proceeded to make cookies from scratch. They turned out perfect. I can bake anything now. I mean anything. So I bake things for family and friends and we have that along with the Syrian dishes she used to make that I now prepare in her honor. While I am baking or using her recipes, I feel her close to me. I feel her strengthening the bonds of love in our family.

Some may think this is a delusion I suffer, brought on by grief or fond memories. Wish fulfillment. But I am a polytheist and Hellenian and I know what I know. She is here, she loves us still and watches over and guards our family. She retains a sense of herself and assists our family. She is a divine being. She is a god. And I honor her as such. This may not be high-level theology, but it is this simple worshipper's experience and thoughts on what is a god.
