Lesson Five: The Hypnotic Screens

You will have to keep an eye on them of course. Unfortunately, the enemy will use the screens as well. Before you know it they'll be watching a film into which one of his minions have slipped a 'redemptive theme'; unfortunately few of the films are totally our own. The film makers—even those who are in it to get rich—realize that a 'good story' sells and that the hairless brutes go all sentimental and insist that the 'good guys' win while our own characters are defeated. Before you know it your little brute is actually thinking about being 'heroic' himself and feels inspired to 'do the right thing' and 'stand up to evil.' Oh, it's all very slippery dear worms, and as soon as you think you've made progress you find the enemy has slipped in some sort of 'message' and all your gains start sliding away.

This brings me to the subject of sentimentality. Chapter fourteen for tomorrow, slime strings. Snort, bring Glimwort down here will you? I've got a free period next and I think it's time we took him down to the training center for some re-education . . . of the physical variety.
