The Power of Film and a Storytelling God

Neither 12 Years a Slave or Cast Away are evangelistic tracts for any particular ideology, nor were they written by preachers or pundits. But they are both compelling human narratives that invite us to find ourselves in the symbols of the story. Sometimes these films will lead to political change or social campaigning. Many times they won't. But the point is that these stories always affect us, and that is the power of film.

As Christians, we ought to value film enough to take it seriously. Films can and do change us. That should do more than simply make us careful. It should make us grateful — grateful for being made in the image of a storytelling God, and grateful that the story he has written gives our stories true, and lasting, meaning.
